PDAs/iTouch in clinicals?

by nohika

Has anyone ever had a nursing school where they flat-out refused to let you use PDAs or iTouches during clinicals? I was talking to a friend earlier who's applying for the program I hope to enter in the next two years (recently started my pre-reqs) and just wanted to know if anyone had. Can't find someone to ask at my own college. I want to find out because if they allow them, I need to start saving up for them now, haha!

I would suggest asking your nursing advisor for the school you are interested in to find out for sure what the case may be. The program I am attending actually requires we buy a PDA for clinical use. Others it is merely an option. The only restrictions I have heard about are using smartphones such as the blackberry or iPhone that also have cameras as some facilities worry about HIPPA violations. There may well be some clinical sites that have banned any PDA use all together though. Good luck in your search!

Our Nursing Director is the one who made the recommendation to us. I don't see why they would not allow them (Docs use them all the time). I use mine often just to do a quick check on drug dosage, adverse rxns or something (I have a cool OB "wheel" app. that takes the place of carrying one in my pocket). But double check if you want to be extra sure.
