| | PDA's and programs I see lots of people (including myself) asking for advice on PDA's and programs for them. Someone suggested a forum for them a while ago but that obviously didn’t' happen. How about if we made a sticky for them it would be a lot easier. Would an admin do this for us?
If you have a pda, tell us what your device is, how much it cost you and where you got it, what accessories did you buy, what accessories do you want, any pros and cons, what programs came with it, and what programs did you get (free, trial or $) and how did they work for you? As a working nurse, what is your job title, how often do you use your pda at work, how useful is it to you on and off the job (same question for those who are students and prospective students - what are you studing instead of what's your title).
And if you're looking for a pda or programs feel free to ask anything I've left out.
:Me:
I'm a CNA student (start today actually) who's applied to nursing school and I use my pda every day. I use it for work/school schedule and appointments, reminders (of anything from chores, to bills, to calling friends...), I play games, I study and I read on it. I use it on the go, in the car, at friends, while shopping and at home.
:My device:
Dell Axim 50 www.dell.com for more info on price and features
Extra accessories I bought:
bigger battery, hard case and screen protector at www.aximcases.com
accessories I want:
car charger
wireless keyboard
flash card for memory
gps (a bit out of my price range)
complaints:
can think of a few off the top of my head
1) the cradle broke (but it was probably my fault, it was in my book bag), but they sent me a replacement as soon as possible. Only problem with getting something replaced is to send the old one back you have to use the company they used and you have to be there for them to pick it up rather then just sending it at the post office and you have like a week to do it - i worked every day and couldn't do this so i had to just pay the $13 or so for the new one.
2) battery life with the original battery isn't horrible, but isn't great either if you can't get to a charger every day
3) I'm already just about out of space with all the programs i have and have put on it, only have room to put one mp3 and can't fit any movies (not a huge deal) so i want to get the memory card
4) it's my fault for not getting assistance, but i dont' understand the whole wifi/bluetooth internet connection thing
impressed with:
I've dropped it several times (with and without case), and nothing bad happened, only once the batery came loose and it went into sleep mode so my files wouldn't get lost.
I like the look of it and how it feels in my hand
i didn't think i'd like the skinny stylus but i do
i like the fact that the screen is bigger, i mainly chose the pocket pc because the palm usually had the little writing box on the bottom that cut the screen off - id rather have more viewing
I love the calendar, keeps me organized and i don’t' have little papers with reminders scattered all over the place
Onto the programs
:It came with:
pocket word & exell
much like the pc version, i use exell to keep my budget in mind, don't use word very much (this is where the keyboard would come in handy)
avantgo (which is free for anyone) avantgo.com http://avantgo.com/frontdoor/index.html
you choose the channels you want - i've got USATODAY for news, AccuWeather for wheather in my area, allrecipes for recipes and cooking tips, Hollywood.com for movie listings and info, and mapquest for directions - i had pdamd but their articles NEVER updated so i got rid of it, and i just got drcooper.palm so i don't know what it's like yet
A calender that holds appointment and reminders
great for schedules, it alerts you (if you want) when things are coming up
tasks
i don't use this as much, the schedualer works better for reminders
contact list
with address, emails, work adresses and everything, which is nice cause my cell phone only holds numbers
outlook email
which i don't use cause i have no idea how to use wifi or bluetooth, not that i use outlook anywya
Notes
great for when you don't have time to find a program and you just need to write a quick little reminder or something, i also use it when i'm board to doodle
messaging and msn messager
again, i don't know how to wifi/bluetooth
activesync (don't know if this is just for dell)
put the pda in the cradle and it's automatically synced with your pc, making it easy to add things to it, also (if your online) updates programs
a basic calculator
clocks & alarms
pocket internet explorer
again, I don't use it
it came with two games
Jawbreaker & solitare, love them both
windows media player
i only had room for one song (i'll be getting a memory card soon) and it sounded good enough, but I'm sure with headphones it'll be crisp
transcriber
the program that takes your handwriting and tries to make turn it into type, it usually works prety well, you just need to write fairly neat
there's also a block recognizer, on screen keyboard and letter recognizer
for input, but I only use the transcriber and keyboard
you can put a password on it, but i don't, you can change the screen from portrait to landscape, you can change the brightness, but the brightest is the only thing useful, the Today screen is nice and you can change your background (there's a million free ones out there),
there is wifi and bluetooth
again, no idea how this works, the only time internet works on my pda is when i put it in the cradle and i'm on a computer with cable internet, i have a cell phone - but wouldn't that cost extra to go online with it?
switchbar
a nice program because when you click the x on programs it doesn't actually close it, it minimizes it, so i can use switchbar to close one, or all the programs running
file explorer, search and remove programs
good to know whats on your pda and easily get to or remove programs
:I've downloaded:
Hot Death UNO http://www.pocketgear.com/software_detail.asp?id=11008
(free) which has a few, uh, interesting cards
ALL-IN Texas Hold Em http://www.birdsoft.biz/holdem.htm
(trial) I love texas hold 'em
BGLightCE (backgamon - or however you spell it) http://bglightce.homelinux.net/index.html
(free) but sometimes freezes
Mastercook
($) bought it for my desktop off Amazon.com; for the pda it can hold recipes and shopping lists
Epocrates Essentials http://www2.epocrates.com/index.html
(trial) you get a list of Rx and what they're used for and dosages, DocAlersts (updates everyday when you sync), DocMemos (just a notepad basically), deip rate calculator, fahrenheit/celsius converter, MedMath, Mobile CME (these are medical articles with quizzes at the end too) - i don't have much use for it all yet, but wanted to check it out
RNotes http://www.skyscape.com/estore/Produ...?ProductId=999
(trial) theres a lot on here that looks like i would use, i'll wait until class to buy it $
PocketExams
seems i can't find the site anymore, only sites for palm
(free) annoying to get to work (have to make the quizes on your computer and if you miss one little thing it won't work at all and you can't open it back up to fix it...) but it's the only study helper that I've found free to actually work (even if it is a pain in the but, it's worth it to help quiz myself)
Microsoft reader http://www.microsoft.com/reader/downloads/ppc.asp
(free) to read ebooks and dictionaries - http://www.mslit.com/default.asp?mjr=FRE&mnr=FRE000010 has a bunch of freebies like the Wizard of Oz, War of the Worlds...

I just ordered the Dell x50 684 off of ebay, should get it in a couple of days. Did you get any of the software off of skyscapes? It sounds pretty good, but I"d like to know how it works. This is a great thread, I actually came on here looking for info on PDA's. Keep the info coming....

I have an HP IPAQ 3315 (I think). It's actually geared more towards multimedia (I can watch movies, listen to music, actually replaces all the remotes in my house for tv, stereo, dvd, vcr, etc.). I bought it because I couldn't find the one I really wanted in any stores or online (sold out). I think it cost just over $300.00 (it was my 2004 X-mas present from my hubby).
I LOVE it! I do everything with it! MS Outlook, Contacts, MS Word, MS Excel, MS Powerpoint, Adobe Acrobat, Windows Media Player (I have tons of music on it, but also downloaded heart and lung sounds).
I downloaded checkers for fun, but would like to have more games; need something to relieve stress!
For school, I have RN Notes, Tabers Dictionary, Lippincott's Manual of Nursig Procedures, Davis's Drug Guide for Nurses (all of which were required or suggested reading for NUR 101; sure beats carrying 4 books around!!!!), Netter's Anatomy Flashcards, Flashcards 101 (allows me to build and download 1,000's of free flashcards from StudyShack.com). Most of these programs came from Skyscape.
Also downloaded/have: MS Pocketstreets (maps galore); HP Image Zone (photo manager); Agenda Fusion (great time management/calendar tool, w/cute icons to differentiate btwn types of appointments (hair, school, mine vs. my son's or husband's, etc.)
I can't imagine living without this wonderful tool! I had a Palm 505 several years ago and used it religiously until I lost it during my move into my new husband's house 2 years ago. Of course, I found it about a month after I bought my new IPAQ, but I LOVE my IPAQ more because it's MS Windows based and works great with all my PC programs from my laptop.
If you can afford to buy a PDA, do your research and figure out what you need and how much it'll cost. Epinions.com is a great resourse. So is CNET.com and other computer geek websites (yes, I'm a geek too).
I had to add two 512mb SD cards to accommodate all the programs/files I have and they're not cheap (around $30-$50 each), so keep that in mind as well. You'll need a good carrying case/pouch/cover for it too. I got a nice leather one from Krussel (it has slots for my SD cards too).
I'm sure I don't use my PDA to it's fullest capability, but I love what it does for me right now. It's great being able to use Taber's or RN Notes while I'm in clinical skills lab (I should start clinicals in 3 weeks and can't wait to use it).
Good luck, I hope this was helpful. | | No. 4 |

calzonan:
i only have the RN notes free trial but it does look promising
"Skyscape has announced that a recently released study in the American Journal of Health-System Pharmacists found that Skyscape-powered references were the best drug interaction software available for PDAs."
source: Ectopic Brain
CrabbyPatty:
Do you remember where you downloaded those heart and lung sounds?
I'm very interested in getting Netter's Anatomy Flash Cards right now, I'm debating $50 though they have a free trial here http://www.medicalwizards.com/client...B&productid=62, it looks very nice and if I get it and start practicing now, I'll be one up on my classmates...
Are you sure about StudyShack.com it didn't lead me any downlaods, just a bad search engine
Too bad they don't have Maine maps for pocket streets
I have to agree CNET.com is a good source to reaserch PDA's (or eny electronics) - they have videos and reviews...
I just found another FlashCard program, if you look on the website they have a few premade medical cards too. You have to do a bunch of stuff to register (which is free), but otherwise you can just play with the 10 day trial. You can make your own cards right on the pda. http://www.handymed.com/HandyCards/index.htm Handy Cards
Most people have recomended to me Taber's Cyclopedic Medical Dictionary, 20th Ed free trial or purchase $50 here: http://www.skyscape.com/EStore/Produ...?ProductID=221 | | No. 5 |

IS a PDA worth it
HI
I am currently taking my pre-reqs and have been accepted into a RN program starting next Sept. I do love computer things but have not invested in a PDA yet. I am a mom of 2 and work 2 part time jobs so every cent counts.
But if a PDA really helps then I will invest in one. Also what are the most important things it must have. I will use it mostly for school.
THanks

I also have the Dell x50v I purchased on Ebay ($330 or so) with extra battery, cradle, 2 yr next day warranty, free windows media 5.0 upgrade. If you keep an eye on: http://www.aximsite.com/boards/forumdisplay.php?f=20
you could occasionally find Dell sales between $265 to $275.
But Dell now released the x51 so we'll have to wait and see how aggressively they try to sell them.
Programs I have downloaded and used.
Epocrates Essential Rx - Free and I love it! The interface is wonderful, but doesn't have nursing considerations. You can also download many hospital or health insurance formularies.
Diagnosaurus - free and works well for differential diagnosis. Nice user interface.
Mosby's Nursing Drug Reference 2006. Upon purchase you get a few weeks use of the eBook reader (should be standard, but weeks later you learn they want $20 to keep it active!) but even then has a very clunky and nonstandard user interface. About the only good news is that it covers nursing considerations.
Taber's Cyclopedic Medical Dictionary (20th Ed) is great, has a nice user interface as well.

Pda
I have a Tungsten E palm. I have found alot of free down loads I find usefull for work and at school. I am an LPN , new grad. Epocrates is free and you get alot of cool information with it. I update it every week and I have all the newest drug information that isn't in the drug books yet. I use it alot at work. I also have Nursing diagnosis that I used alot when I was in school writing all those care plans. On the Palm One site there is alot of free programs for your PDA. I downloaded a speller, since I cant spell worth a darn. And I downloaded a lab value program for quick reference. I also got the medical abbreviations dictionary. There is a dosage calculator program as well. Its great for peds , and adult dosaging. I have a quick contact list that I have all the phone no.s I use alot. I really like the reminder feature on mine. It will alarm and remind me of appointments . I have documents to go, which can be translated to Word documents. I also have excell where I can make spread sheets, although I dont use it that much. I use my pda everyday at work and for personal stuff. It keeps me organized and helps me at work as well. I like having the information at my finger tips.
