Official Palm Pre Thread

Updated Jun 10, 2009 at 11:09 PM by keithjones

Since the Palm® Pre™ (the much touted iphone killer) is now available on Sprint network we need a place to post nursing related impressions, apps, etc. for this phone/pda. There are many wonderful reviews of this phone all over the web but no concise resources for nursing related info. Apps are few and far between for the moment but word is that it runs old palm apps using an emulator. If you have this phone or know of any nursing related apps available for it, please post on this thread. If someone can sticky it that would be great!

Here is an article about Palm Pre having no medical apps at launch. There is a video showing Epocrates running on Classic a Palm OS emulator that will run existing apps, available for $29.99! The Epocrates website shows the following:

Not nursing related directly but as many mursing students are on a tight budget this article shows the huge savings of Sprint's Everything Data plans VS the competition. a good read for sure if you need to save some cash!

"In the final analysis, this is definitely a valid talking point for Sprint and something would-be Pre owners ought to consider. Granted, no one's going to question that Verizon's got a larger coverage footprint -- but if Sprint works everywhere you need it to, you're basically looking at a new laptop, a bunch of steak dinners, or a metric ton of ramen by the time you've worked your way through a full contract."

Mmmmm Ramen!

Thanks for starting this thread. I am trying to decide between the pre palm and the Iphone. I have had Sprint for 6 years and it works pretty good at my house. AT&T doesn't usually ring through BUT it's not like I'll be home much in the next couple of years....

Well...after reading your article about the cost of the pre palm vs. others I guess I will go ahead and spring for it. I also enjoyed your article comparing the pre to the Iphone and others.

I am already on a waiting list for it to come in locally. My current plan is a phone only and my phone is a 4 year old reliable Motorola, so I guess it is time to move up the technology ladder.

I'll report back when I get my new palm pre.

Everyone is out locally here as well. I may wait till fall to get one since my nursing classes don't start till spring. by then thay may have a 16GB model available or a model that has the keyboard on the long side of the phone since the pre's keyboard is a little on the small side.

Hi, sorry I haven't reported in sooner but I have been spending a lot of time with my new palm pre.

Lets see I purchased the phone on 6-21-09. It wouldn't activate but they said it usually takes an hour or two and if it didn't activate by the next day to come on in. Well.....3 days later and many calls to what I only assume was India my phone was finally activated. It would have happened anyway from what I understand in 3 days on its own. The problem as they explained it was that I was switching from Nextel to Sprint. I said huh? They told me it was like switching from one carrier to another. On top of that I was switching from a digital plan of talk only to a new plan on Sprint's 3G network with unlimited data, messaging, and email w/450 minutes. The cost is what they advertise $69.99. I have gone onto Sprint and double checked the numbers and the plan to make sure I didn't incur any additional charges as I have been surfing, emailing and texting like mad. I wanted to make sure everything was right before the 30 day return period was over.

I had a pleasant surprise after looking around on the Sprint site. My old Motorola phone that was like 4 years old was worth a $50 recycling rebate. I printed off the labels to send in the phone. But during one of my many trips to the Sprint store I found out that I could just take it to the Sprint Corporate store by my house and they credited my account immediately. They couldn't belive that Sprint was paying me $50 for an old phone.

So to shorten up my post the total cash outlay was $299 plus $30 for a leather case plus $30 for a car charger minus the $50 recycling of my phone. I am supposed to get a $100 rebate sometime in the next month or two.

As far as apps I have a whole nother post to make on that, lol.

I also have a lot to say about the pre palm but I will save that for another post too.

I am SOOOO frustrated! I really love my Palm Pre, but no nursing apps??? I spent over $200 for PDA software that my nursing program required, and used them on a Palm TX fine. Now I don't know how to get them on my new Palm Pre without having to download a stupid "Palm Classic application" to use my nursing apps and spend another $30! I haven't found any other helpful information about how to do this so I will have to resort to calling tech support, which I hate but it's the only option left. I am pretty sure they'll tell me the same thing though. The reason I got a Palm Pre was because I figured that using all my nursing apps on a Palm TX, it should work great on a Palm Pre. I should have looked for more information on this, so of course that is my fault. But come on Palm! Same thing for med student apps. I mean so many of us use Palms for those reasons. Ridiculous.

Other than that, I really love the Palm Pre and recommend it to anyone. Good thing I still have my Palm TX for backup while I try to find another solution, but if I have to spend another $30 just to get my $200 worth of apps to work, on a $200 phone.... that will really upset me.

Welcome to the world of being on the "cutting edge". PRoblems like that are always going to be there when your looking at the lastest and greatest hardware and newest thing on the block. When you on the cutting edge sometimes you bleed.

You have to look at what your priorities are and if you have to,spend the money. Be prepared for some of those palm alps not to work. The emulators and such depend on programs following the rules.
