iPhone instead of PDA?

by jla623

Does anybody use an iPhone instead of a PDA for clinicals? I know a lot of schools require students to have a PDA (mine doesn't), so I was just wondering if anyone uses an iPhone and if it is the 8 or 16GB. Most of the medical software is available for Apple that I have looked at and there are even some free ones (like Epocrates).

Also, which programs do you use?

Any help would be appreciated. I am debating whether or not I should get a PDA or if I should just get an iPhone. I think I am leaning towards the iPhone.

Thanks!

Bear in mine that the iphone is more likely to grow legs than a boring old pda. Mine did.

No iPhone but I have a Blackberry Curve (pink! It's sooo cute! lol!). I got the Constellation package from Skyscape. I use it *constantly*. I just turn the radio connection off and use it as a PDA when I'm on the unit.

I have a Palm Treo, it's not required in my program but I LOVE having it! It's so helpful, I use it all the time in clinical, and even in lecture I'll quickly look up things and never look back while my peers might be struggling to still locate their medical dictionary in their bag. I'm a member on Skyscape too...I didn't do the constellation package, have just bought 1 thing at a time -- but do think it's a good investment. My understanding too is that Palm and Windows OS (I think that's the correct term) overall is more advanced when it comes to their medical software available. Blackberry & IPhones are playing catch-up. Now in a few years, that will probably change. It's just now still that more hospitals and teaching institutions have used palm & windows mobile so there is more available. Good Luck!

What programs did you end up getting? I'm thinking about getting Taber's. I got the trial version of the nsg dx ones and they didn't seem helpful at all. Just described the dx but no suggestions for interventions, etc. I LOOOVE the Davis Drug Guide, the Labs one, RN notes is so-so, coding one I didn't even download to my phone. Love the Archimedes calculator. I want to get a couple more programs before ICU rotation next semester. So what did you feel was most helpful among the ones you got?

ive got an iphone

epocrates is good but it requires an internet connection at all times. bad if you cannot get a signal in the hospital, but good if you can get 3g or wi-fi in the hospital. a lot of programs store the information on the phone but this one gets the info from a central site. i think they should include more information about what the drug is used for and how its used, but other than that its a neat little program

i also have
medical calc - ok program but has a lot of short comings
eponums - ok program to superficially describe things

I most recently got the Taber's Medical Dictionary and it's fantastic!! It does require an extra data card b/c it's takes up so much space in the phone. The other one I have is RN drug - it's simply a drug book on the PDA, but very convenient & less bulky than a actual drug book to carry in your pocket. With these 2 things and RN Notes I've had most of my questions answered quickly while at clinical. I know there are a few text book companions that are available for download too -- not sure if this would be helpful or not, depends on your class & your textbook. Good Luck.

So would the Epocrates with a problem with any PDA because of the internet connection? Or just the iPhone?

If so, I'm sure I can find some other programs. This website has some free ones and a nursing section as well.
