Best iPod/iPhone app for nursing school?

by tejon

I just bought an iPod Touch and am loving it so far. I am starting nursing school next month and want to install an all-in-one app that will help while I'm at clinicals. I can't seem to decide between Epocrates, Skyscape Constellation, and Unbound Nursing Companion.

I am required to buy a lab & diagnostics book, and it's recommended that I get a drug guide and a medical encyclopedia. I'd love to take care of all three on my iPod so I'm not carrying a bunch of books around. Unbound allows access to books on my PC as well, which is a selling point. Skyscape seems to be less expensive. Epocrates seems to be really popular with nurses who are out in the field. I would like something simple to use, hopefully with cross referencing (which all three seem to have).

Any thoughts or suggestions?

Well, you seem to have done your research in this area. The one application that has been most helpful to me is Nursing Central from Unbound Medicine. Their support is free and the software is very fast on my device. By having the app on my touch as well as having access on my computer as well has helped me in numerous ways. It's nice to have access online as I am working on projects and just general homework. As far as price, use promo code 55F46G for a 10% discount! Hope this helps.

I have Nursing Constellation Plus from Skyscape which includes Tabers 21st edition Dict. Davis drugs guide, Nurse's Clinical Pocket Guide, Diseases and Disorders- A Nursing Therapeutics Manual, Davis's Comprehensive Handbook of Laboratory and Diagnostic Tests With Nursing Implications and many more alert programs. I can access the products from any where as it do not require wifi. Hope it helps....

Thanks for the information. This is all new to me, however I like the sound of this application. Where do you buy the programs ? on line or is there a shop that sells everything you need ? Do you upload all these programmes on a ipod ?

I have purchased them online from Skyscape website and it can be installed on the iPod device. You can visit their website for detailed information.

I think I'm going to go with Unbound Nursing Central. I like the fact that I can access all the same information on my computer and that the text is coming from books I'm required to have as a student. I also downloaded Skyscape Constellation for my computer as a trial run and really disliked it. Epocrates sounds like a good idea once I'm actually working as an RN, but not necessarily the right choice while I'm a student. I'll check back in once I've used the application for a while to give a review.

My last clinical instructor suggested Epocrates to us. For doing med cards, I don't find it very useful. It doesn't list any nursing considerations. The only think I like it for is a quick reference and sometimes it's more up to date than my current drug guide. I haven't tried Unbound's Nursing Central. It looks good but wow! It's expensive.

You're right... it does seem expensive at first. However when you look at the combined price of all of the books, you are actually saving money with this app. Also, Unbound doesn't take the application off of your device after a year like other companies. You will have them forever.
