I just got accepted to SFSU for Fall 2010 and I am reading all these threads on what I need to buy for school. Almost everyone points out a PDA/Iphone is needed. Anyone using an Ipad or plan to? Reanna... Read More

I love my iPad ( typing this from it ) but I'd go with the iPod touch because of it's size

I'm surprised that only a few of you use your laptops to take notes. I'd say at least a third of my class users their computer for notes at any given time. And using a tool like MicroSoft OneNote, it's possible to import the electronic notes from the Proff (even full slides), take notes on them (writing in my case since I have my tablet), and audio record the lecture. The cool part is that OneNote synchronizes the audio recording with my notes. So, when go back and I'm trying to figure out what the heck I wrote/typed....there's a play button to the right of it that will start the audio recording 5 seconds before I wrote whatever the mysterious word is.

    Peace,

Mostly that's because more and more teachers are forbidding recording and computers in class. I'll go spidermonkey if I can't have one or the other, but it's because I *have* to have them or my notes are for crap. Not sure that'll get me any sympathy, but I also haven't heard anyone in my program talking about not being allowed.

I may go for the smart pen, if I have to. That's sneaky and might slip under the radar.

I must have missed the memo that a PDA is a must for NS. I'm young and I appreciate technology, but no PDA/laptops/ipad's are not necessary for NS. I would say about 2-3 people bring their laptops to class. Our notes are always in powerpoint slides, so additional notes are handwritten in easily--and cheaply.

In the hospital, no nurse or doctor uses PDA's. What are the computers for?! How does someone know if you're using it for pleasure or for work?

Ipad has no word processing, major bummer, and I still don't understand the reason why anyone would want it. It's just an oversized Ipod touch. Apple and their fanboys. I don't get it.

Interesting, our program is the opposite...we're encouraged to bring our laptops to class. I record all my lectures as well and ask each term to be sure and none of my Prof.'s have had any problem with recording lectures. I'd be really ticked if I was told I couldn't bring my laptop....that's how I take notes.

I saw the smart pen, but then I'd still have to manage all that paper.....major drawback for me.

I don't recall saying it was a "must" for nursing school. I did say it was incredibly useful and that I use it every clinical day and that's true.

Your Doc's really don't carry PDA's at all? Most of our nurses don't (although a few do), but just about all of the Doc's have resources on their phones. Guess folks are just smarter in your part of the world, so don't need to look things up

I do write my notes on the PowerPoint slides provided....I just do it digitally....very cheaply as I don't use ink, or paper. I bought the computer, but I needed a computer for nursing school anyway. Different strokes for different folks. I don't manage paper well, so this way I much less paper to deal with.

Nobody in my class uses a laptop in class and we are allowed to. I have the android phone and love it the most I have nursing central (we got a discount for our school) on it that has everything and I also have skyscape on it and tons of other apps I have found. I usually get the latest gadgets and this by far has been my favorite.

Ooh, just found out we can record but not use laptops. I guess that's a good start. But no knitting. Boo. I remember so much more if I can work with my hands.

I haven't heard of the Nexus one?? I got the slide our keyboard and touch android with Verizon when it first came out. I had a BB storm prior.

I tape record my lectures on a recorder that plugs into my laptop and uploads everything to Itunes.
