Epocrates Essentials question

  1. I would like to buy the Epocrates Essentials package. My question: when the 1-year subscription to the program runs out, what happens? Does it disappear from your PDA, or can you just not get updates? I have searched the Epocrates site and could not find an answer. Thanks!

I've heard that it actually locks and the content can no longer be viewed. I'll find out when mine runs out in a couple of weeks!

When you purchase the program there is an auto renewal, the company sends you email reminding you it is time to renew and they will automatically charge your card unless you cancel. If you use a card that may have expired in that year, you just can't update or access the "pay for" portion of the programs. The drug guide portion still works as that is free to everyone.

My subscription just ran out....You can still use the drug guide, but no lab, diagnosis, tables, medtools or other premium options. Kind of a bummer, I liked the program, but i think its like 110$ a year.....

Thanks everyone for all the replies....
Is Epocrates Essential worth the $$$? I really like that it's all integrated and connected, instead of being separate programs that don't work together.

Do you guys like Epocrates better than Davis? Have you used both? I have only used Davis drug guide along with many other Skyscape programs that link together. They are different programs though so I'm not sure how that compares to Epocrates.

hi Larry, I have Epocrates and my suscription runs out soon and I've elected not to renew it. I purchased the Skyscape Constellation for Nurses (which comes with Davis' Drug Guide) and I added on Taber's and Nursing I.V. Drug Handbook.
Epocrates is decent, but I wouldn't call it nursing focused. I like Davis' much better than the Epocrates drug guide. Everything bought through Skyscape is linked together so you can cross reference things. I do have to say though, that I like Epocrates Dx better than the 'Diseases and Disorders' that is in the Skyscape only because it has more entries. But Skyscape's Diseases and Disorders' (which isn't there only offering, but it's the one I have) has nursing considerations in it.

I've used Epocrates Essentials for the last year. It's about to renew but I'm not going to. Here's why. First, I've had tons of trouble syncing, especially wirelessly, via bluetooth or wifi, using the Palm TX. And my career before nursing was in software development so if I have trouble, I'm imaginging those with less technical knowledge definitely will too.

Second, in the course of trying to find a solution to my sync problems, I discovered that Epocrates collects your usage data which they then turn around and sell to the drug companies. i.e., during syncs, they collect data on which drugs you've referenced, and forward that info, anonymously, back to Epocrates. That data's then aggregated and sold to the drug companies for market research purposes, I'm guessing.

Anyhow, I would look elsewhere if you haven't already invested the money in Epocrates.

    Regards -

Oooooh...doesn't that just frost my cookies!!!!!!! ...collecting my data and selling it.... Oooooh....naughty. ...i'm sure when I bought the program this info was in very tiny print. I know they're not the first company to do this, but still....

I use Skyscape package now, used to use Epocrates Essentials but now only free drug reference on my LifeDrive. I like the Skyscape much better, more nursing focused, easier to use, and a little less expensive. They also offer many add-ons that integrate well with the basic package. I would recommend Skyscape and the free Epocrates drug guide.....together, offers nice coverage and info.
