I just received my acceptance packet today, and have started going through everything that they want. Lots of things to get ready from background checks, to having my immunization titers run.

solidermedic, Congrats! keep in mind that your Hep B series will take a total of six months to complete...so if you have not started it, get on it. Also, the state is paying the counties for health workers to be immunized, so I got mine free at the county health dept when I told them I was going to be a nursing student in the next few months. I think my titers was $10 for TB, also at the county dept of health.

Thanks for the info. I served as a medical laboratory specialist in the US Army in hospitals and blood banks, so I have had all my shots (several times over in fact). I would think that as long as I still seroconvert and my titers are good, that it will suffice. I don't mind getting them over, but seroconversion should be the industry standard. Actually, I was attending nursing school in 2003 at Maryville University, but was deployed for six years. Due to this I am being forced to take pathophysiology and pharmacology over, but they are accepting my health assessment course.

I think it would be a good idea to keep this thread open for folks to join in on once they get their acceptance packets. There are a few things confusing in it, and I have sent an email to Tina Saunders at the College of Nursing for clarification.

Anyone else out there get their packets? Anyone know how many open spots there was in the clinical major for Fall 2010?

Congrats Soldiermedic! I was beginning to think I was the only one who frequented allnurses. I also received my acceptance packet. I haven't heard anything about how many open slots they have. I know that they reserve 5 clinical slots for active duty military (I took one so that leaves 4 open for Ad). I already had the Hep B and most of the required immunizations ( bless those annual rounds of shots) but I still need the titers. I completed the drug screen and background check. That was my hope that this thread would stay open and grow as folks got their packets. I saw one from 2008 I think and it really seemed like a good start for making connections and info sharing before school starts.

Do you have to take the Jr level writing class?

My situation is a little different than most, but here is my story. I went into the military in 95 right after high school. I was injured during a night land navigation exercise that was exacerbated on a military parachute jump. This led to my discharge in late 1996.

I started classes in general education at UMSL in 1997. Between UMSL and St. Charles Community College, I took all the classes I needed to almost finish my business degree. After absolutely hating accounting, I decided to go into healthcare since i did well in science. At the time, UMSL offered a program for cytology. The prerequisites were the same as the nursing program. I did take the jr. level writing requirement, and I think that it is a requirement. Did you get a sheet with the listed courses you have taken and the list you still need in your packet? I received that paperwork and it shows that I still need nutrition. Looking to take it at the community college as it would be 1/3 the cost (and it's online instead of 4 weeks of MWF for 3 hours). Word is that pathophysiology may be offered this summer as well. I took this course at Maryville, but they are requiring me to retake it along with retaking pharmacology.

In 2001, I was eligible to get back in the service, and in August 2001 I reenlisted. A few weeks later 9/11 happened. I was removed from school for several missions, and was able to get back to school in 2003. This is when I attended nursing school at Maryville University in Chesterfield, MO. Then the 6 years of deployments came along and took me to where I am now.

I took care of the background check yesterday, and will make an appointment for the drug screen tomorrow. That will be interesting considering that I run a business as a toxicology screening and collections company.

I think I will get my appointment made with a counselor, the school VA rep, and an appointment for my physical/TB/titers, etc.

Seeing you are AD military, I can only assume you are out at SAFB in IL. My wife is AD military, and goes to SAFB alot to re certify her EMT classes and CPR at the hospital. I am personally interested to see if I can get into a CPR class out at SAFB as a veteran as well.

Wow you’ve had quite an interesting journey. I partied through a year of college before joining up in 94. I wanted to get into the medical field then but was shunted into Communications. That proved to be an 8 year detour. In 2002 while in Korea I finally reached a point where I had the maturity, discipline, and had tolerated comm. for long enough to get back into school.

I checked the summer schedule and they will be offering pathophysiology so I will be taking that and the writing class this summer provided there are spaces left . They are only offering two classes and one is for the accelerated program so hopefully it won’t fill up.

I planned to shoot an email to the Chief Nurse on SAFB to find out if the BLS class is given on base for the hospital folks. When I get a response back I’ll let you know the schedule and whether or not they’ll let us take it with them.

Soldiermedic,I checked with the hospital training guy @ scott and they offer the BLS class once a month to AD, ANG, and AFR. He is verifying whether they can allow veterans to take the class. Once he gets back to me I will let you know what he says. The next class is scheduled for 18 Mar 2010.

My wife takes all of her recertification classes over there at the SAFB hospital. It would be nice to be able to take it, but I will just find another place to take it if need be.

I spoke with someone in the advising department to get the info I needed, and schedule my appointment. Pathophysiology will start May 17th, and be every Thursday from 0900 to 1220. The class ends the first week of August. I plan to take both Patho and nutrition, but nutrition may not be at UMSL. At least I took care of my physical, TB test, and titers today.

My fall semester is looking pretty easy with the 6 hour clinical course, pharmacology, and I will likely take the Health information management course from another semester.

I plan to take patho and technical writing to fill my jr level writing requirement. My Fall semester is looking pretty easy as well I'll be taking the 6 hour Nursing and health, Assessment and pharmocology. Hopefully we'll hear from others that will be joing us in the Fall soon.
