Tech school vs community college...

HI! I am presently at Maple Woods community college in Kansas City ,Mo taking my pre-req's for the ADN program. This ADN program could take forever to get into so I was thinking about changing routes and doing the LPN to RN route. Does the school your go to matter as much as how well you do in school? Has anyone heard of Northland Career Center LPN program or the Concorde Career College LPN program? Any advice or info would be great! Thanks, Tamela

Would you mind sharing how long it took you to be accepted into the program? I turned my app in two weeks ago and currently have a 4.0 (although it appears that as long as you have a minimum 2.5 this would only come into play in cases of a tie). I will have all general and science course work finished, except for Micro, by December 2005. So, I am hoping that I can start clinincals in January '06. Does this sound possible? I am worried about 2-3 year waits that I have heard others talk about. What did you experience?

Funny story..I applied to the program in the spring with my BEST friend, Beth. (She happens to be an L&D nurse now, BTW.) We were told that we wouldn't be able to start the program until the next spring. Well, we weren't happy with that response at all and felt we were getting the run-around big time. Beth is just as determined as I am, if not more so. She just wouldn't take NO for an answer and kept at them in the nursing office until they gave in.

We got in the following fall. ;)

They even let me start the program without having the majority of my pre/co-requisites completed. Like I said in my other post, I was HIGHLY discouraged from taking classes with the nursing courses, but I did it anyway and did fine. (and I've NEVER been a 4.0 student either...closer to a 3.0.)

I don't know how many are applying for the program now...maybe there are more now than there were 5-6 years ago.

All I can tell you is BE PERSISTENT. Don't let yourself fall through the cracks..it's been known to happen.

Persistence may just pay off. It did for us.

I forgot to add that I took Micro in the summer along with Speech at Maple Woods.

The Micro instructor up there is pretty good.

Thanks for the information:) It's good to hear from someone who REALLY knows . Also, did Beth get hired into L & D right out of school? I am really not interested in working in any other areas, although I may have to. Again thanks for the info.

Yes, Beth got hired on in L&D as a New Grad. Many of us got into specialty areas right out of school. Not only that, we had our positions secured 2-3 months BEFORE we actually graduated. I started out in the Operating Room and eventually moved to ICU by choice. Beth is still in L&D. Her husband also graduated with us and started in ER.

Interestingly enough, I applied for L&D at a few hospitals. I was sure that was what I wanted to do. I didn't get it and was so disappointed. Everything happens for a REASON...this is so true. My husband and I are fighting the infertility battle. Emotionally, I don't know what it would be like for me now had I actually gotten the L&D position. BTW, I love ICU and will be staying there!

So, keep an open mind. You may just find another area you fall in love with either during school or shortly after. But, I don't think you'll have a problem getting an L&D position at all.
