St. Louis: SSM Futures Program, New Grad, NICU

Hi everyone!

I am a new grad looking to move to St. Louis. It has been my dream to work in mother/baby;NICU;special care nursery etc.!!! (have not taken NCLEX yet)

I am a recipient of the HRSA Nurse Corps Scholarship Program, which means I am required to work in facilities in a health professional shortage area. Under SSM Hospitals, cardinal glennon is the only facility that qualifies.

I was looking into the futures program, but was unsure of how the process worked, especially with my particular situation. Would I be able to choose the facility I wanted to work in? Is the futures program the only way I would be able to get into the NICU at Cardinal Glennon?

The next cohort starts on June 20th. The cohort after that starts on September 19th. Applications for the September's cohort are being accepted until August 21st, 2016.

Although it is less than a week until June 20th, they may still take you, especially if you have your RN license; it does not hurt to call HR - although, you might end up at a different hospital, but you may be able transfer after a while (tip: do not let the nursing manager know that you plan to transfer!)

Application Process:

1) You apply online: Search Jobs at SSM Health

- search keyword: futures

- Follow the instructions!

2) If they are interested, you will then receive an email/call from HR, asking for a phone interview. It is during the phone interview that they ask for your top 3 hospitals and your top 3 choices for specialty (i.e. med-surg, surgery, ER, ICU, etc.)

3) If you are successful with your phone interview, they will then have you complete an essay and get two letters of recommendations (using their forms).

4) From there, you do in-person interviews with the nursing managers (or the nurse staff - depends on the unit). starting with your top hospital down.

Warning: Cardinal Glennon is a popular choice, especially the NICU unit. Be open to any unit at Cardinal Glennon. Remember: you may be able to transfer later. Oh, who am I kidding? You are likely be able to transfer later - provided, you do well during orientation.

I actually sent in my application, and received an email to set up a phone interview the same day! Today, I had my interview and about 5 minutes after, received the email to complete the essay and the recommendations. Interview was not too hard!

Yes, unfortunately it was too late for me to interview for the June cohort, so if I make it through I will be a part of the September group. Thanks for your insight!
