St. Charles Community College Nursing Student

U.S.A. Missouri

Published

Hi. I am new to this website - I just registered today.

I am starting the nursing program at St. Charles Community College this Fall semester. I have read over the program information for both the lab and lecture and it looks pretty intense, especially the lab.

I see that a lot of outside practice is required for the labs. If anyone is interested in being a partner with me for the sake of practicing their labs, please let me know.

My class schedule is as follows:

Monday and Wednesday Lecture: 8 to 9:50am

Tuesday Lab: 2 to 4pm

Thursday and Friday clinicals starting at 7am until noon

I am not employed so I am pretty open.

I would love to make new friends for school. Let me know if anyone is interested in getting in touch - especially if we have the same class/lab schedules.

I thought that it was very interesting. My insurance will not cover any of the vaccinations that are needed. My doctor wanted to know why they wanted the titer for the MMR because you only need that vaccine once in your lifetime. I'm going to check with the health department to see how much they charge. What did you think of everything?

Well, if we have had MMR as a child, then our shot records (if we have them) will show the dates in which they were administered. I would think that that would be sufficient as opposed to getting a titer; it doesn't seem necessary if we can provide documentation through our shot records that we have been vaccinated previously for the MMR. I still don't know if I can access my shot records from years ago. Going to begin looking into that Monday.

I thought the orientation was interesting and very informative. I'm doing everything within my power to get a bangup deal on my books, even if I purchase the previous editions of the ones that are available. Just don't want to end up cutting myself short in case there's something important missing in the previous edition that is only available in the newest.

So, yeah! :D

Also, I was going to look into the health dept, as well, but if I am in need of a titer in case I can't access my immunizations from past, then I am trying to look into clinics in the area (ie. Crider Health) as they offer medical services and some immunization services to people for a sliding fee (those who don't have health insurance).

yea I am not looking forward to getting all the immunizations. going to get them over with! yes, the books are very expensive, I wonder if the place around the corner from school sells them any cheaper? I have never been there before but several people have said they get good deals on books there. what are your schedules like? I have mon and tues lecture 4-5:50 pm, tues lab 1:00, and clinicals thurs and fridays 7-12, definitely will be interested in getting a study group together in the fall

I got M, W lecture from 10-11:50, Tues lab 10-11:50 and Wed/Thurs clincal from 3pm-8pm. I had to register at 6am on the dot to get into those evening clinicals. It was well worth it, as there is no possible way for me to do 7am with the time I need to get to clinicals and arranging that around my daughter. :) It seems like a fairly light schedule vs. what I will probably be seeing in Spring '12, so for that, I'm relieved. :)

Going to try to get my immun.'s and textbook business taken care of well before July, as well.

@Paramedical Girl I don't know about the book place around the corner. What is the name of it? I'm interested in checking them out. As for the immunizations, I have an appointment to get the titers done on Friday to see if i have the immunity. But I will get all the vaccines from the health department because my insurance doesn't cover them. Also I'm thinking of moving to St. Charles County because it would save me so much money and time in the long run.

I dont know the name of th bookstore by there or even exactly where its at....just heard its right by the school...

don't think I will hv classes with either one of you! I planned my schedule so some of my classes were late afternon/clinicals daytime to mix it up a little bit...kind of a different schedule but it works best with my work and kids...

thats prob a good idea to move closer yd bush-it could create some extra time studying instead of driving!

I signed up for all evening classes. I'm looking for a place right now in St Charles. Hopefully I find something soon!

Hi I am new to the forum thing, I signed up and am doing my pre-reqs right now, I will start clinicals august 2012! (as long as everything goes as planned) now are the clinicals for 1 year or 2 years? I am just debating between student loans and bening fully devoted to school, or working while going to school.

@T-shirt girl I'm not sure about the work thing either. I know that I do have to work because I am the one paying for this.

As for everyone else I wanted to know where you all were with the immunizations and everything. My insurance is not paying for any of this. So I researched the titer info. I prepaid for the titers through private md labs. St Charles County Health Department said if the titers came back negative then they would immunize you for MMR and chicken pox for free. The total cost for me for those two titers was $92. St Charles offers the Hep A and B vaccinations for free and the tb test is $15. So all I've paid is $107.00 for everything because I already had the tetorifice shot.

Hope this info was helpful.

Hey..

So, with the immunizations, ydbush.. here's my update. It took me quite a few phone calls, faxes, and visits, to get to where I am now. As is life. :)

I was referred to a place by the health department called anylabtestnow. I got my MMR/VZ Titers and my TB done there, for a total of 148.00. Ouch.. however, I ended up winning some in the end. :)

I used to work in restaurant, and I knew I had at least my first dose of Hep A back in '04. Called the health department that did it, and they told me I got both Hep A & Hep B on that date. So, I had already had 1 dose of Hep A and 2 does of Hep B. I got my 2nd Hep A and my 3rd Hep B earlier this week, so I am clear in that arena.

Titers showed I don't need my MMR/VZV - immune to all - 3 through vaccination, 1 through past infection.

Paid 35.00 for Hep A at St. Charles Co Health Department, had all files of other past vaccinations from my high school and health department faxed over to them so everything is all on one sheet. They didn't tell me Hep A would be free. Hep B was free, though. Twinrix they said is free right now. I got them separately, though, because I've previously had Hep B vaccine x2.

I am scheduled to get my Tdap in 2 weeks, hopefully for only 20.00 through doctor's office who offers services on sliding fee scale. All in all, 203.00 in the hole. Better than I first thought it would be, however. :)

Yay! Finished with that, almost.

Let me know how things are going for you,

Elizabeth

Wow! What a lot we have to go through! All I'm done with everything except for the twinrix. I had the first injection almost a month ago. Second injection is June 27. After that I'll turn all my paperwork into to the nursing office. I already took the CPR too! Have you taken it? I guess I'm almost ready to start classes now.
