No tuition reimbursment or loan repayment?

Just curious if anyone besides SSM hospitals are taking away tuition reimbursement and loan repayment. I found out last week that they were going to take this incentive away for 2009 and revisit it again in 2010 due to the recession. :uhoh21:

I live near Peoria, IL and yep our three big hospitals just made the paper with this lovely news.

UGG. That is not the news that I was hoping for. If one hospital starts it then it seems others will follow or so it seems. Thanks for your response.

I heard this today at Cardinal Glennon from some of the nurses (i'm in my peds clinical there now)...and I said the same thing---if they start doing it, the other hospitals will probably follow soon. I'm scared, because I had plans to jump right back into school after graduation, and if they do this, I might not be able to! :/ No good.

The other thing I'm seeing in my area: hospitals are no longer contributing $$ for 401k funds. This is something that hurts all of us too.

Yeah I heard this too, from an advisor @ UMSL, she heard if from some nurses employed by ssm. I hope it doesn't spead!

At this point, be grateful for every tech or other support personnel that keeps their job in addition to any nursing positions. I thought I read on here that St. John's wasn't having a Fellowship program for spring grads and that hiring was down period for new grads?

While all the perks are nice to have, right now I'm grateful to be gainfully employed and feeling fairly confident I will continue to have a paycheck through all this mess. I am more concerned about the ancillary staffing being cut, further adding to the workload of the RNs and other healthcare employees who continue to have jobs!! I'm happy to delay further education and would like to think about retiring sooner rather than later, but will take what I can get until things pick up again!!

I forgot that they were no longer doing this either. You can continue to contribute but they will not. I am grateful to have a job. I just wonder if the cuts could have come from somewhere else. Not much to do except wait and see.

St. Johns is hiring new grads, but in limited numbers. I am a Virginia resident who was trying to relocate to Missouri after graduation and I had an interview set up for their L and D fellowship. After I had gotten my plane ticket and made plans to get out there, I received an email that they could only consider internal candidates for the position. 400 people had applied, 370 were external and 30 were internal. Also, I have applied for 16 jobs both in Virginia and Missouri and have only gotten 2 interviews. I just heard back from UVA and they did not accept me even though I completed some of my clinicals there. The job market is tight and in school we are told they always needs nurses, but I am having trouble believing this as of lately. Good luck to all of my fellow May new grads who are seeking jobs!

That's horrible!! I hope you were able to get a refund or at least a credit for future travel! So sorry to hear that!!

I think there are still some areas where schools aren't abundant where hiring is good. In STL we have an awful lot of nursing schools and the spring is always a tough time to find a job and apparently worse right now.

Wow, this thread is making me reconsider nursing school all together. Once I graduate, I will have roughly $55,000 in student loans (I'm a junior). The hope was that I would get some financial help with tuition reimbursement. This is scary.

Nursing shortage is nationally. However the financial difficulties are as well. Lets face it the dollar runs this country and take away the dollar take away the jobs. The higher pay will go and be replaced by lpn. The rn will remain however in less numbers. The techs will remain in same numbers. Hopefully this wont last long and hopefully the government will get involved before too many patients are injured. I personally know of two wonderful nurses that were terminated for petty infractions and replaced by inexperienced lower payed nurses.
