moving to St. louis, need info

hello to everyone on the forum. I am moving to st. louis by the end of september. (am currently waiting for my temporary license from the BON) My question is, what is a nice area for a new arrival, single, kinda poor student? an area that is safe and close to everything. Also, I was on careerbuilder.com and alot of their posting are in IL. Do many people cross the border to work while living in MO? what is the ballpark for the starting pay for LPNs in St. louis area? Thanks

Welcome to St. Louis! I think you'll find that in St. Louis the cost of living is very reasonable, but this might also translate into not getting the salary you're used to (depending on where you are coming from, of course). I can't give you much information on starting salary for LPNs but I do know that most of the hospitals in the St. Louis area utilize mostly (if not all) RNs.

You are correct that many people work in MO and live in IL, and vice versa. It's more common to see people working in the city and living in IL though. Areas you may want to consider include the Illinois side (especially if you plan on working there), St. Charles area, basically any of the outskirts of the city of St. Louis. As a general rule I would say the closer you get to the city, the more chance of finding unsafe neighborhoods. The same holds true for the Illinois side. Also, the farther west you go from the city, the more expensive it is. Chesterfield, Clayton, Ladue, and a few others are where you'll find the most expensive neigborhoods.

Any other Missourians please feel free to add/correct things!

I'm a St Louis "city" girl myself. Have lived in various neighborhoods through out the city for the last 25 years. If you have any questions about specific neighborhoods let me know!

I think there's a lot of relatively safe areas in St. Louis, except perhaps the city itself, and more specifically the north side and E. St. Louis.....I work with a lot of people who live in So. St. Louis and they have some lovely areas....

If you don't mind a bit of a drive, Fenton, Arnold and areas like that have lots of new building and are a fairly short hop down the freeway to a lot of area hospitals....

Coming here from L.A. where I was born and raised, I have come to really love St. Louis (minus the muggy and hot summers!!).....

    Good luck!

I agree. I live right along I-55 in Jefferson County and it's great! Rarely any traffic on that freeway.
