attention all mississippi nursing students and future students....by now you all are aware of the healthcare reform bill passage. many of you as i, have not read the entire essay of the bills structure. however, im sure we are all familiar with the highlights of the bill. this post is not to say wheather you are for or against the reform but to establish a alarming statement..the proposed bill will reduce hospital and nursing home financial reimbursements by some 500 billion bucks. Now that is a staggering peice of finacial cut back for all hospitals. that with the added continued reduction of other payments to hospitals it is quite clear how medical facilities will try to re coup this lost money. nursing and nursing support staff will take a huge hit. the present job market for nurses in the state is as bad as it has been for the last 10-15 yrs by many accounts, ask any new graduates and they will inform you of the pain of trying to find a decent job (meaning one that you can function in with decent patient loads, support and fair pay). if you are already in school or about to graduate, well you got to do what you got to do..but for you out there that are really considering this field, you have better pay attention and do your own research on how this affects hospitals and med facilities on how they employ nurses. the bottom line is the hospital has to make a profit to hire and employ nurses. it the hopsital is losing money they will cut back on nursing staff and bennifits, and that is the way many interpet this bill. you must beaware of this before you start paying that tuition. good luck.

Is there any response from students or future students on this post?

MY opinion, this is a huge mistake that will bite us in the a**.. We can't even afford Medicaid, Medicare, SSI, and so on..

I'm currently in school and hope this does not completely prevent me from getting a job once I graduate.

KellPN did you have any luck finding a job?? I just got accepted in the PN program for this Fall!! Think I will have any luck next year finding a job??

Congratulations on getting into the PN program. Are you going through Hinds? If so what campus?

I did find a job at a nursing home in Ridgeland in January.

I'm also finishing up my RN through Excelsior and am waiting on my clinical dates.

I don't think you will have trouble finding a job, it sounds like most of my class from December 2010 have found jobs.

GReat!!! I am going through Holmes in ridgeland! ALso what is Excelsior? never heard of them?

Excelsior is a distant learning college for nursing and other degrees. You can read a ton about them if you go to the students page on here and hit distant learning.

With all the LPN-RN programs at Hinds and Holmes so full for a couple of years I figured this would be my quickest way to become an RN. IT's not easy, but well worth it.

wow, I never knew that hospitals accepted online. That is really good!! Congrats! It may be an option for me to bridge over that way!!! Thanks for the info!!
