Please don't fail to recognize that you live in a storm-zone. Yes, it's been 4 years, but consider this: economic theorists believe that Hurricane Camille set the development of our area back 30 years. People are afraid to leave jobs, and people are afraid to commit to hiring. IMHO- education (particularly in a tech field) is never a mistake, and NEVER a waste of your time.

Not a nurse yet, working on it- that being said, I would offer the point of view that I would take all that is posted with a grain of salt. Who knows what myriad variables amount to someone not getting a job. Perhaps the market is tough- who knows. I know in my own job searches, I have seen all manner of med field jobs- that's all I see! Look at Better Gulf Coast Jobs.com, or better yet, careerbuilder- look at MS- just in Jackson alone there are numerous jobs. They would obviously limit the new grad hires, but....I'm just saying that the jobs exist. Google search "high demand nurse". And don't buy into end time theories that you can't risk looking for another job. Sheesh.

For anyone who lives in the Jackson area.... I heard an advertisement on the radio that River Oaks is hiring due to their expansion being complete.

The problem is not the amount of job openings available, because there are plenty of openings here on the coast but its a matter of are they willing to hire and train new grads. From my experience and several others the answer right now is NO. I'm sure in the Jackson area the job market is more favorable for new grads, but in this area it's not. The only position I've been able to find besides volunteering is a temporary job giving out flu shots. Hopefully this will give me the experience I need to get my foot in the door somewhere permanently.

What you are doing (volunteering) is a great idea to get your foot in the door. Just keep talking to HR, and they might hire you because they see how persistent you are. Have you tried any hospitals in Jackson? I know the VA had a hiring freeze about a month ago, but it might be lifted by now. Try UMC or CMMC. They might have openings due to people not wanting to work there. Especially, CMMC! You might need to leave the option of relocating open. You need to go wherever in MS to get a job. Actually, I enjoy Jackson. Not a big fan of the coast, but I do enjoy Jackson. Lots of young professional people move there. So be open to relocate to Jackson if you need to. Anyway, good luck!

I'm not knocking nursing because I got accepted into a Fall program. You just better have faith in God to get a job even in nursing. If you have a job, you should just arrange your schedule around nursing school. I wouldn't suggest quitting it. Again, I suggest you to have faith in God. God's people are prospering and finding jobs in this economy other's who aren't connected to God are the one's who are worried. I know folks might get mad, but it is the truth. This is not the time to fall off with your relationship with God. I just felt that I should add that.
Ummm..wow. I'm thinking that the economy/job security crisis does NOT have any relation to a person's faith (or lack thereof). People of every religious/non-religious persuasion are suffering right now. Your caveat "I know folks might get mad, but it is the truth" is patently absurd. It's right up there with winning sports teams who give credit to God. As though God cares about the Atlanta Braves or baseball. Are you familiar with the term anecdotal evidence? If not--I'm sure you'll learn a few things about evidence based practice (not doing something/saying something that flies in the face of logic and genuine evidence). Nursing school (should) develop your critical thinking skills.

If you're so sure that "God's people are prospering and finding jobs in this economy" I'd like to introduce you to about thirty people in my church who are financially devastated. I'm sure they'd be comforted by your "facts".

Quite frankly I am not even going to bother to apologize for the negative tone of this reply. You opened this can of worms and stating as fact that "God's people are the ones who are prospering" is a massive insult to those who are dedicated to God and are homeless, jobless, being forclosed on, having their hours cut back, their benefits cut, their jobs out-sourced, etc.

BTW--God never meant the life of a Christian to be easy. How else could our resolve be tested? Everyone suffers. Believers and non-believers. We are all worthy of security. Not just "God's people". Sheesh!

"Da Freak" as you would like to call yourself, I'm not going to waste time with a rude reply as you have done, but I would like to say this. Those who are going through a trial and if they know God, they know in the word that they will overcome if they apply God's principles. They know that God will take care of his people. They must follow God's word whole heartedly. It is not the time to fall off from reading the word, going to church, paying tithes, etc. It is the time to get in the word and actually have faith in it and be obedient. Faith is what moves the mountains. There is no sense in reading the word and not having faith. I know my covenant with God. I know that in God's system there is NO recession. The people of God will prosper if they know how to apply God's principles in the word and obey it. Obviously, what I wrote must struck a cord with you. Someone who's a Christian would agree with what I said, and most definitely wouldn't have gotten angry.

BTW: You mentioned something about evidence and logic. With God, it is not scientific nor is it logic. God is moved by a thing called FAITH. Without it, it is impossible to please him.

Vanillavirtue, I hope as you begin your nursing education you learn to only express opinions when you have proof or experience to back them up. I can't speak for CMMC but... Have you worked at UMC? Have you applied for a job there? The fact is that in December and May there were more applicants than there were RN positions. UMC is a Level 1 trauma center with 4 adult ICUs. It has the only Level 3 NICU, the only Peds ER, and the only PICU in the state. PICU and NICU will soon have ECMO capability. I don't work there because I couldn't get a job anywhere else; I work there because I didn't want a job anywhere else. State retirement and insurance don't hurt either! Yeah there are some floors no one wants to work on, but that's true at all hospitals. Also as you begin to do clinicals please don't discuss religion with patients using the tone you did above. I have met many patients with very strong faith who were suffering terribly. Keep in mind that even in Mississippi not everyone worships Him the same way. Good luck in your studies may your journey be a blessing.

Why is it that people are so sensitive and quick to offense now days? The statement that I wrote was to help the young individual that had a question about where to apply for nursing jobs. UMC and CMMC are both hospitals that have a lot of turn overs. UMC is also a large hospital with plenty of areas to work so new grads would need to try there. Also, everyone has a right to voice an opinion. Also, you mentioned something about tone. For one, we are in a discussion board and you can't hear my tone. You do not hear my voice inflection nor do you see my body language. So for you to say that I need to watch my tone, would be absurd. Also, I'm not afraid of the gospel. I'm not afraid to shout on the rooftops about what Jesus has done for me and what he can do for people. Now, I do agree with your statement about discussing certain things with people about God, because it could be casting pearls before swine. Some things people aren't ready for nor do they have an ear to hear. Anyway, good luck to you as well and may God prosper the way before you!
