What are some of the nicer hospitals in twin cities?

U.S.A. Minnesota

Published

Hello, everyone!

I am graduating from my ADN program this May and plan to move to Twin Cities afterwards. I have heard about the hardships of finding a job for new grads there, but I just absolutely love the area! I do have some experience working in acute care as an LPN, and hope it might help to find a job. My question is: which hospitals have good reputation among nurses and which don't? Are there any places I should absolutely avoid?

Thank you!

What about St. John's in Maplewood? I work in a clinic near there, and the doctor I work with LOVES St. John's, he thinks that the nurses there are the best.

I had my OB clinicals there and loved it.

I can only speak for United- it was a awesome place to work as a nurse 16 years ago. It has gone rather top heavy now and not as supportive of their nursing staff. It continues to have excellent and talented nurses- but management does not seem to appreciate their good fortune. Unfortunately, I dont see a lot of change soon in that attitude, and can only see that as a concern now. Perhaps Abbott has a different perspective?? That's just my opinion though.

My husband has been working at United for 11 years. Apparently they have a new president and he is very well liked. He has lunch with employees and things like that. Maybe that'll shape things up.

If it is the same one that has been new (approximately 3-4 years ago he has become the new president of United), he may have many meetings with the employees- but I don't thiknow if it has produced many varied outcomes. ( I have heard that from other employees and a physician concerns). But remember, these are only individual opinions- not always truth based. I can only speak about the engangement surveys done yearly- (this is the second year), really negative outcome in a few depts (mine)- and no follow up, no improvement, no action taken. I guess I would like to see a meeting or survey with follow through. Just my two cents.

Gosh, I would kill to see that at my job. I should clarify that I don't work at this hospital, but I definately have noticed a trend in upper management to say 'we hear you, we're going to work with you to fix things'. And then there is no follow through. It's discouraging.

I graduated in May 2005. I have been a nurse at the University of Minnesota Fairview-Riverside. Riverside is an awsome place to work. The nurses on the Riverside campus have a very strong union contract. The nurses on the Rehab unit are very supportive and helpful to new nurses. I have heard the the nurses on the medsurge unit on floors 8 and 10 can be very cruel:angryfire to new nurses.

Part of the University of Minnesota is NON-Union. They get treated somewhat the same as the Union nurses on the Riverside campus, but being union is definitely better. For example, if we are punched in and staffing wants to send us home, they have to pay us for the whole shift; therefore, we are protected. If Non-union nurses are sent home, they're paid for the hours worked-not the whole shift. We are paid triple time on :biggringi Christmas, they are paid double time.

A friend I graduated with started at United and left because the training program was poor. :uhoh21:

One of my friends started out in OBGYN at the Allina hospital in Buffalo and loves it. Another friend was an LPN there for 15+ years, loved it, and is now an RN there.

Abbott Rules. I unfortunately moved out of state in 2002 and had to leave Abbott. I have worked many hospitals. After weighing all the facts....I like Abbott. My friend works at North Memorial and likes it there. I was a pt at North and it was a good stay.

The main reasons why Abbott rules....fairness created by a strong and bonded union. The hospital seems to work hard with keeping employees happy, provides great educational opportunities, has a great atmosphere to work in and works with the community on it's rehabilitation.

The neighborhood has a bad reputation but it has improved significantly. I was only scared a few times but nothing happened. You can have safety issues anywhere anytime...just be aware of your own personal safety and follow safe practices and you will be fine...in any environment.

I am currently doing a travel assignment at Regency Hospital of Minneapolis. The staff enjoy working there and I have found it to be a very nice place to work.

The VA Medical Center is also a great place to work, and it's not downtown Mpls. DHamilton

Several months ago the VA was on the news about nurses quitting because the staffing was SO horrible! Might wanna follow up on that!!

I think it was the VA nursing home that was on the news and not the Medical Center. The nursing home was having staffing issues due to the mandatory overtime and poor working conditions.

I have heard wonderful things about the VA hospital. It is a very nice hospital. I had a few trainings there for work. I also had friends that have done some clinicals there and all of them stated that they would work there. ;)
