I am looking to relocate in Cook County, Mn. We presently live in the deep South. My husband will be going there for his job. Does anyone know of job opportunities on the Grand Portage Indian Reservation? I just completed my MSN for teaching, but there are no schools in that area. Will appreciate any responses. And it gets HOW COLD there?!!!!!! I'm thinking I'm going to freeze!

Couple of things....

I do not know anything specifically about that area of MN, I DO know that rural MN is much more in need of nurses then the Twin cities, which is saturated with people lookin' for RN jobs (everytime someone on here posts that they are planning on moving to Mlps/St Paul JUST to get an RN job I groan cuz there are already WAY too many of us who go to nursing school here who will have a tough enuff time lookin' for work)

Second, in regards to the weather, I'm not gonna lie it's gonna get cold- HOWEVER keep in mind that as long as you dress warmly and be part of smart planning, you will be just fine- besides, the landscape is one of the most beautiful places in the US, and makes up for the weather

Think of it this way- I would never personally wear the type of clothing I wear during MN in the month of February while I am visiting my relatives in Myrtle Beach pretty much anytime of year- just don't try to dress like you would for a southern winter up here:) that right there is over half the battle

Thanks for the response. I have the LL Bean catalog out thinking I might should invest heavily in it. I'm thinking the warmest boots they have, lots of wool, layered clothing, good warm hat, etc. I lived in Michigan one winter many yrs ago and nearly froze, but after outfitting my 3 little girls, there was no money for clothes for me.

I liked Minneapolis when I visited, but I prefer to live in the rural areas. I'm a country girl. And yes, the scenery is beautiful. I've been as far up Lake Superior as the Split Rock Lighthouse which is almost as far as where I'll be going to live.

Thanks again

Happy to help!

One major cold-weather wear tip, make sure to invest in some lightweight thermal pants to wear under your jeans, etc., like these

http://www.amazon.com/Terramar-Womens-Thermasilk-Blush-Medium/dp/B001UCDUZ4/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=sporting-goods&qid=1258140875&sr=8-2

these particular ones are more $$ then I would recommend spending, but you get the idea...

Also, long skirts are good cuz you can layer several pairs of thermal pants, lightwieght and thicker ones in combo if need be:)

Have you looked for jobs in the Grand Marais area? It's a little south of the Grand Portage reservation. Grand Marais houses the Cook County Hospital/Sawtooth Mountain Clinic, and I think that there is a school up there...here is the URL for the local newspaper, the Cook County News Herald:

I think that they have job postings in there sometimes.

Good luck! I absolutely LOVE that area, and it's my dream to move my nursing career to Grand Marais someday. As for the weather, it's cold and snowy, but it seems that many days in the winter, Grand Marais isn't that much colder than the Twin Cities. I agree that one should invest in some good long underwear, a good down coat and some heavy-duty boots. Layering and fleece will be your friends!

Good luck!
