Wow, you are definitely a world traveler like your name. I was an exchange student to Japan in 2006 but haven't had the opportunity (because of needing to work) or the funds to volunteer any place like that.

It really does not take a lot of funds. I used frequent flyer miles for the plane ticket. Then in Malawi I paid 5 USD a month rent staying in the village. I bathed in the lake so there was no water bill. There was one light in the shack but I think the electricity was included in the rent. I ate in the village for 1 USD a plate. If I wanted to eat in the mzungu (gringo, or what ever other word you want to put there) guest house on the hill it would put me out 3 or 4 USD for a nice meal.

Travel in the developing world can be very, very cheap. I was paying 3 USD a night staying at the guest house on the hill. I had my own bungalow over looking the lake. It's cheap but 3 USD times 30 days is 90 USD a month. 5 USD a month is way cheaper. Not as glamorous but cheaper.

In Bali Indonesia I paid 2.30 USD for a room and private bath that included free breakfast of yummy Indonesian coffee, a pinapple or banna pancake, and egg, and fruit. The place wa super nice too. The bathroom was open air so you are staring at the moon while you shower.

I was working on my Padi Dive Master certification so I was staying there for over a month. Had I paid day by day it would have been a whopping 2.70 USD a night.

Again travel in the developing world is dirt cheap.

I could talk forever about travel. It is such an eyeopener. And do it alone. You will get so much more out of it.

Sounds like you had fun though.

And if that GPA stuff is true, guess I'm out! lol

I still have my fingers crossed though! You never know!!

Hey guys!

I just called and was told that a cover letter is NOT required. She said as long as your essays, transcript and faculty letter is received then you are good to go. Also, I asked which GPA they look at and it is the cumulative GPA. Let's all hope for the best. I really need to get my mind off this!! I go back to school this upcoming week so that should help...hopefully :D

Also, I was reading last year's threads and someone got in w. a 3.7 so perhaps this 3.8 rule is a myth!

My friend that told me was in the program and had been speaking to someone in charge of the selection process. She may have used that GPA just as an example. But she said the first dump the GPA's and then they read the essays. She said 3.85 but she could have been using it as an example or someone at Mayo told her 3.85 or maybe it is lower.

I was just relaying info. We will see what happens. Thanks for calling.

The cover letter may not be required but it will definitely make the candidates with good cover letters stand out. Again this program is so utterly competitive I personally wanted to do everything possible to have the best application and no reason for them to discard my application for any reason.

I didn't find out until I was doing the application and I had 7 hours before the 15th was over. I made sure that I added one because I didn't want to give them any reason to not choose me.

Yea, It's good to include everything! We'll just have to wait a few weeks and find out! You guys should let us know when you recieve your letters!

Yes definitely. Everyone post when they receive their letters, please.

I wonder if it'll say on the website if we are accepted or not---like on the "Job Application Status." Right now mine says "Application in Review."

Mine says that too.
