- Jan 21, '02 by KRVRNYes. I work NICU and we frequently have the fathers donate a unit of blood for their baby. Then we just draw off whatever amount we want to transfuse the baby with. If it was thrown out after 7 days most of it would go to waste because its unlikely we'd use all of it that fast.
