Hello,

I am a new grad starting in the SICU. Could you please give me advice on what to start reviewing before I begin orientation? Thanks, I really appreciate it! I'm nervous about being out of school for a little while and not remembering things. Yay... I'm finally a Nurse :nurse:!

Oh, and HR did tell me yesterday that I should get a status update for an interview in 2 weeks. I've been hoping for one really really bad!!!!

I'm so sorry! It's so difficult to get a job right now, believe me I went through it too. Just keep applying to everywhere! I thought I was never going to find anything, but finally got the job that was the best fit for me. Just treat the job hunt like a job. Do it all day every day. You will get better at "marketing" yourself in essays and do what you can to boost your resume even more. Take extra certifications (ACLS, PAL, EKG, etc.), keep volunteering at an RN. Keep rewriting your resume and essays. Just don't give up. And if you get offered anything, take it. You can work anywhere for a year and then move on to a better location or unit. One other thing I did was talked to alot of nurse recruiters from agencies. I really didn't want to move outside of San Diego, but began to look in other places/states because it was taking so long. I found alot of recruiter in Texas that had openings for new grads. Just a thought for you. There were lots of other states that do have jobs. So if that's at all an option for you then look up some agency companies and see what they have. The recruiters get a commission so they are better about helping get you interviews. Good luck!

I have an interview with this laser center. Full time RN. Removing hair and cellulite. A little odd I know but I thought it's a full time RN job so might as well try. What do you think? I'm still searching for a hospital job in the mean time.

That is a very unusual job. :) hmmmm That's a tough one. I'd normally say don't turn anything down, but my worry is that it would make you not eligible for hospital new grad jobs. I guess go to the interview and see how it feels and what exactly you are offering. Also think about how many actual RN skills you'd be using. And would you enjoy it? Could you do it for a year or few years? Let me know what happens.

That is my concern... that I would lose my RN skills. I don't think it will affect me getting into a New Grad Program. I called before and ask if doing Mollen Immunization disqualifies me for the new grad program and they say no. I know some places say zero RN experience for New Grad Programs, but what do they expect me to do? Nothing while I wait? It's so hard to get a volunteer job as well. I did apply to an unpaid externship for 3 months from Jan-March. I'll know if I get in around November. If anything, I can do part time that clinic job, and part this externship. I heard hospitals hire RN New Grads through that type of program. I just think I need to start working since my loan repayments will kick in soon.

And now the trend in the bay area is "clinical nurse 1" positions versus "new grad programs". This is why I think this clinic job won't disqualify me since it's not acute care. I think new grad programs are more common down south and it's hard to get an interview down south when I live in NorCal. I've had 3 phone interviews before for SoCal and 1 HR interview in Orange County... and it didn't go anywhere

I highly encourage you to continue to seek out externship programs! A nurse recruiter at an East Bay hospital said they give preference to new grads who have gone through an externship program. USF has a New RN Transition Program, and Samuel Merritt and DeAnza have similar programs. Good luck to you!

Hey, do you know how much redwood memorial was going to start you at? $30/hr?

Thanks!

Hi!

I was wondering if you could share what kind of questions they asked during your interview at the laser center. Thank you!

Would anyone be able to comment on how long it took for you as a new grad in the SICU to become comfortable?
