sedation protocols for vented patients

  1. The hospital where I work is about to institute a new protocol for sedating mechanically vented patients. This protocol is entirely based on recommendations from the Society of Critical Care Medicine and the American College of Critical Care Medicine, and specifically calls for the use of morphine, fentanyl, and hydrocodone for analgesia, versed and diprivan for short term (<24 hrs) sedation only, and ativan for long term sedation. If you have any experiance using a protocol like this, I would like to hear your feedback on the success (or lack of) in managing vented patients with this combination of medications.
