I'M LOOKING FOR INFORMATION ABOUT TOOLS FOR MEASURING PATIENT AGITATION. WE ARE LOOKING AT WHETHER OR NOT WE CAN REDUCE THE NUMBER OF BACK INJURIES IN OUR UNIT WITH SUCH A TOOL AND THE SUBSEQUENT USE OF PREINTERVENTIONAL SEDATION.

My institution has just initiated a mechanical ventilation sedation protocol. We use the Braden Scale to assess the patients LOC and administer Ativan(weight based)in increasing doses at timed intervals until the pt. reaches the Braden score desired. Each shift, we then attempt to wean the dosage to prevent oversedation. It is still too early to assess the effectiveness of the protocol, but if you want more information on this, let me know.

We use the Riker sedation/agitation scale.
