university of detroit mercy second degree program

U.S.A. Michigan

I am thinking about going to Mercy's accelerated second degree program but I hear they lose many people during the year due to grades. Is that true? Is it too fast and should I consider a 2 year program? I am a good student but I'd hate to spend all that money then not make it as they don't allow anyone to retake a class so I hear as other schools do. I am open to all feedback. Thank you.

Hi guys ! I just got into U of D Mercy and Oakland University's accelerated programs. I am so torn between the two and cant decide which school is better. I need major help from anyone who's attended either school!!! Thanks!

What cohorts did you get accepted for at each school?

We have to begin the HESI at the end of our program. I'm in the January cohort.

As for the individual asking if they should go to UDM or Oakland, I would suggest going to Oakland.

Hi, just a word of advice, I would look at the NCLEX passing rate for each school when making that decision, after all that is one of the most important things when becoming a nurse. When I did my research, I think OUs was pretty high, and UofDs is actually not that good.

I'm in the accelerated program at OU, and their 2nd degree program actually has about a 90% pass rate. For that reason alone I'd pick OU.

I can't really speak for UofD about the actual program, but really, you just want the program that will best prepare you for that NCLEX.

I attended an informational meeting at UDM for the accelerated program. They mentioned the NCLEX pass rate and stated there was an issue within the program that was fixed and the NCLEX pass rate was back to the normal high from before the problem. I do know that UDM uses St. Joesph Health System for their clinicals with many of them being at St Mary Mercy hospital in Livonia. Also, UDM has amazing!!! faculty, many of them work at St. Mary's Hospital.

I am a current second degree student at UofD & love the program.

- UofDs NCLEX pass rate for the SDO program is in the 90%s

- They use most/all of the Detroit Hospitals: Henry Ford, the VA, DMC, St Joesph, etc. Students in the past have gone also gone to Univ of Michigan Health System and Beaumont.

- 95% of their students get jobs at Detroit hospitals after graduation.

- It's fast pace and intense but what accelerated program isn't going to be like that. Additionally, the professors are all incredibly approachable and want to help you.

- You must keep a 75% or higher in all classes to stay in the program. You also have to take a medical math class each semester and pass with a 90% or higher. (Neither of these are too difficult).

- All exams in the program are NCLEX style so you are constantly being prepared for the licensing exam throughout the 12 months. The Pharm/Patho exams are taken on a computer (like the NCLEX is) at the lab at school (monitors by the professor, of course).

- The only draw back is the price. Tuition is extremely expensive so if you have a less expensive option I would consider that. +50k for 1 year is not easy.

Good Luck.

BJSgirl - Congrats on being accepted into both OU and UDM. If I had the choice, I would go with OU. It is half the price and the way the OU program is structured appears much better then UDM. 21 credits at UDM the first semester is overwhelming to say the least. If you do decide to go to UDM, take Patho & Pharm at a community college ahead of time if you haven't already. Those 2 classes are the most challenging and time consuming so better to be prepared. Good luck! Best wishes!

Hello! I just got accepted into UDM's Jan 2012 cohort for the accelerated nursing program. I'm super nervous, but have been working really hard to get to this point. Is anyone else starting in January? I would like to get to know some of the people that are basically going to be my family for a year...lol

Hey my name is Angie and I just got accepted to the January 2012 Cohort too!!! Yes I think we are all going to become pretty close next year :) Im with ya in being Super Nervous!!! Are you from Michigan originally or are you coming from out of state? I am from Michigan and graduated from MSU but have been living in Dallas TX for the past year. January is going to be a hard time for me to move back to MI lol but Im really excited to finally be starting school!!!

I was wondering how long it takes to find out if you get into U of D's accelerated nursing program.. I have sent in my application and I have given them my plan to make sure I complete the prerequisites and can graduate before the winter semester.

Hi there,

I also just got accepted into UDM's Second Degree program this past Friday for the January 2012 term. :yeah: I'm super excited, but I'm also still waiting to hear back from a few other less expensive institutions. I also applied to UDM earlier in the year, but my app was pushed back a term because I had to finish my last 2 PRs. If you haven't heard from admissions yet; I'd try calling the office for more info. I've heard there's a possibility that accepted applicants may decline and the pool of waiting students get another chance. Good luck and I wish you well!

Hi! How long after applying did you receive your accepetance letter? I just applied to the school and was wondering how long it would take to hear something? I have been accepted into a Graduate Entry program in Ohio, but would like to start with the BSN program. Thanks and Congrats!

I originally applied for the May 2011 starting term. However, I was pushed to the January 2012 term which had a deadline of May 7 or 9, 2011. I had all of my classes and app materials completed and submitted by the aforementioned deadline and I received my notice via e-mail last Friday. Surprisingly, they took 70 applicants! However, I'm not sure how many applied. I know for a fact that less than 40 were accepted for the May 2011 start because that's the class term that I initially selected. I hear that a lot of applicants are coming "armed" with credentials before deadlines which is making it extremely competitive at UDM (they allow students to apply with 3 classes remaining for conditional admission). However, many applicants are finished by the time they apply, nowadays. Good luck with everything and let me know if you have any more questions!
