No Worker Left Behind

U.S.A. Michigan

Hi Michiganians, (that sounds incorrect, oh well you guys are great)

I know there was a long discussion last year on the issue and i wanted to find out what you guys are hearing. i contacted the person in charge of the program and she let me know that they have run out of funds? anyone hear the same?

xadunzo,

i wonder if that would work since I already tried to go through one office out by me? Do you know? If so, I'll drive the hour it takes to get out there and do it. Any info would be appreciated :)

bugsmom, I did talk to someone at my school who told me they went to several offices. I guess you can do it, but I dont see how it helps. Isnt the money coming from the same place?

That's what I thought. I mean, at the office I went to they told me they have been told to suspend the giving out of money. And eventually if it does get reinstated they won't go retroactive.....so I don't see how the other offices can give money out either. It's complicated. I will drive the hour and a half if I could get the NWLB money. It would definitely be worth it :)

I just called and talked to someone at the office. They said that there is no funding right now and the fiscal year is supposed to start July 1. They may be getting more money at that point but they dont know. Those that are on the waiting list are served so I was told.

All the time I spent up at Michigan Works was for nothing. I have to start all over again from scratch. They dont save files and now I have to do orientaion, testing, all that crap for a second time. This ticks me off to no end. I paid for a babysitter and my time and $4 a gallon gas money to go thru all that before. That place has only cost me money to date.

It is a very hit or miss program, just depends on how lucky you get.

Anne36, which office did you call today? I was at port huron today and asked about some offices having money and they told me that could be very true. She said you could sign up and be on waiting lists for different offices in case one place gets money sooner or doesn't allocate all of its funds.

Sorry to butt in here but I'm confused... The way everyone is talking you can apply to NWLB at any MIworks office - I was under the impression that you could only apply at offices in the county you live in. Am I completely wrong? I hope I am! :)

I guess not...I have applied to Port Huron but the lady who works there told me today that you can go to any office and apply. Perhaps that is why they are out of funds.....LOL I'm just as confused about this system too.

:banghead: The program is not very well thought out. I had a friend on facebook today tell me that he has gotten 10,000 from this program and thinks Im being lied to. (I dont think so) He even told me that they paid for his pre-req classes which I find almost impossible to believe.

I was to the understanding too that you are supposed to go in your own county. Well, there are several offices and I have only gone to the one in my area. Why would the program discriminate based on location? I would think the financing is based on # of applicants not where they live.

Anne36, think he's lying about paying for the pre-req classes. I mean, they wouldn't even talk to me until I took them my acceptance letter today. I'm so confused. I highly doubt that me calling around to every office to ask if they have funds will produce any results. They are probably telling everyone they don't have any money......I'm at my wits end.

I do have an appointment to do the orientation again in July. I have someone who is calling me back the day before and she will tell me then if there has been any renewed funding. She said they wont know until July anyway. Im very frustrated with the process as well. I wonder how the waiting list works if the program is not retro active?

Before I started the ABSN program at OU, the Oak Park branch came to OU and had a meeting. They specifically said to go through them as they don't make you jump through all of the loops as other branches. I have spent less than 2 hours total with their representatives and have received all 10k. Some of the other students that have gone through a different branch, whether coincidence or not, have only received 5K.

Good luck to everyone

xadunzo....wow...thanks! I'm calling right now.
