Hey everyone first congrats on your acceptance and welcome to EMU Nursing! My name is Tom I have been the President of EMU's SNA over this past year and now the VP of Michigan SNA. When I got my acceptance letter I had all the same questions. Scrubs, etc. Over the past year I pledged I would help alleviate these uncertainties. This year at orientation we have scheduled a rep to be there from scrubs and beyond to help you all purchase what you need at a discounted price. You won't need your scrubs for a few weeks into the semester so no rush ok. I will answer any questions you have, but my advice is to enjoy the rest of your summer. It is true that nursing school takes a large amount of time. If you want a tip buy Potter and Perry and just start reading...lol...you will read that book from cover to cover.. The first semester starts off slow and picks up the second semester. No sweat. I'm here for any questions. Our SNA has a FB page and my email is [email protected] if you want my phone number just ask. Again Congrats! can't wait to meet you all at orientation.

Hi Tom!

Thank you for the info! I am really excited to start the Second Degree Program in Sept. Orientation will be here before we know it. I am trying to enjoy the summer before the "madness" begins. I am taking Micro and DTC now to cut down on some of the stress in Fall and Winter. If you can think of anything else we should know please post. :) Thanks!

I also have another question for anyone who can answer it, i have heard about this ati testing we will be doing during the program, is it just to help us prepare for the NCLEX?

I think we buy the tests and they are given in class for our grades. From the 2011 Student Nursing Handbook:

The Assessment Technologies Institute (AIT) achievement tests areadministered upon completion of most didactic courses throughout the nursing

program to assess mastery of specific content...

...Students order and pay for ATI tests each semester online through the ATI website. ATI sends EMU School of Nursing a list of students who have purchased the tests. The ATI study review books an DVD’s will be sent to the School of Nursing to be distributed to the students who have purchased the tests. Fees and deadlines are established by ATI testing service...

...ATI testing is a program requirement in the courses listed above. Facultydetermine how the ATI scoring and test results will be implemented and used in a specific course. The curriculum instruction committee has established the 50th percentile rank or equivalent proficiency as the desired goal for student performance. Students MUST complete the ATI testing to progress in the nursing program. Students are expected to keep a record of test performance and review with their academic advisor...

...The following examinations will be given: Nursing Course ATI Test

What is everyone doing about their books? I recieved the papers about lsevier.com but Im not sure if I should buy ebooks or just the regular text books. I know the ebooks are a little cheaper but I like having a hard copy. Also I was curious why the paper they sent us with all the books lists 7 books but when you look them up on lsevier.com they only list 6 books. Also does anybody know are these JUST the books for NURS. 208/209, if so when will we know what books we need for nurs 220 & nurs 275?? has anyone ever bought these books online from a different website for cheaper or is that not a good idea? I am trying to figure all this out so hopefully someone can help me !!

I haven't gotten any correspondence regarding books but I used ebooks on my ipad last semester. They were definitely cheaper than renting or buying/sellback plus the ability to find things using a search bar was a godsend for me. Without a tablet, I may not have liked that much. I would usually use the ipad and a computer so i could type papers etc and wasnt switching back and forth between programs. I bought my books through coursesmart, but Im not sure about the availability of this semester's texts.

Now that i finally got my packet, I see what you're talking about. When you view the ebook package online, only the Potter text, study guide and evolve access are offered. Neither the diagnosis, drug, and lab test references, nor the Medical Terminology book are shown. I'm not sure if all those handbooks are included with the "BSN NSG 208 EONLY EVOLVE" offering. The two Mosby reference are available on the apple app store. The drug ref is like $45 and the Med Dictionary is $25. And unfortunately, if you download an app to you iphone, you typically have to rebuy the app for any additional devices (laptop, tablet etc). I can send ---------- and email to clarify this.

Taking micro and DTC right now is a very smart move. I did the same and many in my clinical group didn't. They are in the classroom this summer and I'm working in the SICU making money and gaining experience.... You chose right.

cbrooks, Most of the prof's are ok with using an older edition....but I never did. I always wanted the most updated version do to any changes at all. They will use the most recent edition. So my advice is don't cheap out on your life line...those books are read from cover to cover.

ATI .....is a killer. It is used in the calculation of your course grade for most of your classes. It depends on your Prof as to how much they weigh. when you guys get started you will get study guides from the nursing office....read them. The ATI exams are based off of them not necessarily your course lectures. Also they will hit you with a fee around a hundred bucks to get started : )
