Baker College - Auburn Hills - LPN - questions

U.S.A. Michigan

Published

I have read a number of posts on Baker but they are mostly for other locations rather than Auburn Hills. I saw a LOT of angry and unhappy people and only one person that was happy with Baker. I am concerned. I would REALLY appreciate your help by giving me your thoughts and feedback on your personal experiences as soon as possible because I have registered for the Baker in Auburn Hills classes for January 2009.

I need three classes as pre-reqs to the LPN program. I decided to go that route rather than the RN - ADN program in Flint because I will be able to receive my LPN in one year and the Auburn Hills campus is applying for its PERMANENT approval from the State of Michigan for their LPN program. They expect to receive it, and I was told by the state that schools generally receive permanent approval without problem if no changes have been made to the program from the initial approval.

When Baker Auburn Hills receives permanent approval they plan to apply for a LADDER program and offer the RN - ADN program that will be a ladder moving from the LPN certificate seamlessly into the ADN - RN program. The good news is that they hope for approval of the ADN - RN program quickly and they hope it will be only an additional 3 months on top of the LPN program.

That was good news.

Also, I chose Auburn Hills because the LPN program accepted ALL of my eligible classes completed at other schools, and the Flint ADN - RN program only accepts a maximum of 25 credits from other programs.

1 - I am concerned because I have to compete with other students for entry into the LPN program and I don't know how hard the classes are or what grades I will get.

What grades do you need to have to get into the program?

How hard are the pre-req classes?

What is the competition like?

2 - I am concerned because none of the classes transfer to a 4-year univ and I definitely will complete my RN and then either go on for a BSN or MSN completion. But I definitely will NOT stay with only a LPN.

Do you think we will be able to get good jobs with a Baker LPN degree?

Do you think we will be able to go on for a RN and then a BSN and then a MSN if we want at another school when the Baker classes don't transfer?

3 - They are 2-3 times more than community college costs - but I can't wait 2 years to get into a 1 year program and I can't get fin aid for comm college because I have too many transfer credits. I am trying to obtain No Worker Left Behind $10,000 FREE money but so far I have not been able to move it forward until I receive an acceptance letter INTO the actual LPN program. Because they cost so much they are taking money I need to live on and it is a real commitment on my part.

What kind of quality of education will we get at Baker for the money they charge?

4 - I have A&P 2 with Moutafian and Into Algebra with Govil and Med Term with Olley. Has anyone had any experience with these teachers?

I cannot afford to pay for this school use a lot of my fin aid and then not get into the program. Any thoughts?

Just as a side note, my Admissions Rep is really great and the Director of the LPN program has been very helpful.

Thanks for your help! :wink2:

The book that I bought is this one: http://www.amazon.com/Math-Meds-Solutions-Anna-Curren/dp/1401831222/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1239022898&sr=8-7

The name is Math for Meds by Anna M. Curren. I have the 9th edition. The page shows the book, but also shows what is available secondhand. I always order secondhand b/c they are cheaper by far. It has a practice software CD as well. I got the HESI Admission Assessment Exam Review, 2nd Ed., from the book store at school. :)

Hi mrsrlg, I wanted to let you know that I went in and talked to the dean today about the LPN meeting. It will be on the 28th of April at 4:00 p.m. in the nursing lab. Just thought I would pass it along. So far Kash seems pretty cool, I am hoping to do well in his class. Thanks again for a heads up on him.

Thanks, Panky! I will be in class that day until 2:40, so it will work well for me. It may just be another information session, but I plan to attend anyways as there could be new info offered - since the last one I went to was in early Feb. Dr. K. is quirky, but we had a lot of laughs in his class, and the tests are pretty straight forward, which is nice. I'm sure you'll do great! :)

Hi Panky1,

I just thought I would check in and see how things are going for you? How are you finding Dr. K and his tests? He is usually pretty straightforward and gives you an idea of what you need to know, which helps. I read on another thread that you were accepted for other programs, so congrats :yeah: although I know you want into nursing. The way it works makes it all very difficult to know where one will be by September or what we'll be doing, something I find a bit off-putting, but oh well, it is what it is...lol. Anyhow, hope all is going well. I am going to try and be at the meeting next Tuesday, so may see you then. :)

Hi there mrslg! Thank you for the congrats...It was fun to FINALLY receive an acceptance letter to something...LOL I do WANT nursing, so yes I will still be at the meeting on Tuesday. But I figure that if all else fails and I don't get accepted then RT is the way to go. What is two years of doing this program, then work it and then go on to try to get the RN again.....I am already old so being a little bit older isn't going to kill me....LOL

I Love Dr. Kash, he is a blast. I am finding that a lot of it is coming back from A&P. His first test, was easy and I received a 100% on it. I am studying right now for the second test, so we will see how this one goes.

How are your classes going? We have to meet up at 2:40 one of these days on campus....

YW :) I'm with you about receiving an acceptance letter. I think the waiting has to be the worst, and I'm not even at the part where I'm even waiting yet LOL, so I really feel for all of those expecting letters this week. Like them, I'm sure I will stalk the mailman when I know the letters might come :) RT is supposed to be a hot job, according to someone interested in it at school, so definitely a good 2nd choice. If I don't get in, well I haven't decided yet on 2nd choice...lol. Since I'm just finishing up my 2nd year already and am almost a junior, I really have to make a decision and go with it, so I just hope it is with my first choice. :)

Yay! Glad Dr. K's class is going well. I had a blast in his class, too. Plus, he understands that the material can be a bit dry, so he tries to make it as interesting as possible. His tests really are pretty straightforward, which helps. 100% on the first test is a great start!!

My classes are going well. My A&P II instructor gives us pretty interesting activities to do in lab, so that makes it all the more interesting.

On Tuesdays, I'm in class from 11 - 2:40, Thursdays from 11-12:40, and Fridays 9-12:40, so next week (Tues) I will be hanging in the student center until the nursing meeting starts at 4. Maybe we can meet then?

Alrighty then, Tuesday at 2:40 in the student center....UMMMM where is the student center at...LOL Heck I just found the bookstore day before class started and haven't walked around the campus yet....LOL Also where shall we meet up at student center, just so I am not walking around the center asking everyone if they are mrslg.....:lol2::lol2:

For those of you looking at respiratory therapy as an alternative, just a word of advice; go on a job shadow experience for this especially since your first choice is to be a nurse, find out what this field of work really entails. Prior to entering into the LPN program at AH Baker I went on a job shadowing experience. I thought RT would be a good second choice. I went on a job shadow at Genesys hospital with a class at Mott College that was graduating in RT the following week. It is a field of work that is quite different and worth investigating prior to that long commitment. Just some friendly advice

LOL! Don't worry, I was definitely there was and couldn't find anything...lol. If you know where the atrium is (the big open area mid-campus), the student center is right there, where you see the tables and chairs, the cafeteria, etc. They always hold all the events in the atrium. I was in room 122? I think for med term, so if you are there, go out of your classroom to the left, turn right, follow the hallway all the way to the end, you'll be at the atrium. Turn right into atrium and then turn left into student center :). By, say 2:50 or so, I will sit at a table directly in front of the coffee machines, which are to the left just inside the student center. I have shoulder-length blonde hair, black glasses, very fair, blue eyes...:lol2: Yes, that could describe many, but I'll watch the door. :)

Very good advice, adn44! I don't have a second option yet, but for panky1 and others, it is a good idea. Are you in the AH nursing program now? If so, how do you like it? If you're done, how well prepared did you feel, if you don't mind sharing? :)

It is good advice and I have already had the opportunity to shadow an RT, nurse, CNA, ST and even a resident surgeon. My moter was a nurse and when she got sick and lived at Providence Hospital for 10 months, yep 10 months, so I was able to check out different opportunities in health care. I started in school and started pursuing nursing, and decided if I failed to get accepted that I would make a list of my choices by pros and cons. I am a CNA right now and also get see all of it in action. It is always a good idea to shadow and read up on what profession you would like to do.

ADN44 same question as mrslg, how do (did) you like the program? ARe you going on to RN?

mrslg, I will see you Tuesday by the coffee machines....I am in room 110 and DO know where the big open area is....LOL That I found the first day....LOL

Kash lets us out at exactly 2:35 so I will wait for you by the coffee machines...
