Thumbs down Re: WCCC does NOT have an accredited nursing program
I graduated in 2003 a Rn with out accrediation from my school >>> AAS Nursing

I joined the Army and am underqualified for the job I was given .. I am a combat medic ; enlisted private because my school did not have the proper accrediation ; o I will not be able to be a army nurse / officer untill I complete my Bachelors .

People do not realize how imparative it is to have the accrediation. I would now be an officer if that was the case.. It put me thru hell training with kids 20 years younger than me and listening to why I was training with them : because nurses do not belong on the frontlines getting shot at.......

So before one says who cares , ask those who put thier life on the line .. paying the fee and straightening up some of the attitude in the school would be worth more than one knows.

Question: Did you know you would have a problem when you decided to go to the non-accredited school? When I decided to go to WCCCD, I knew up front I would have problems with the accreditation if I chose to join the military. If joining the military was my goal, I would have chosen a different school.

Not all schools are required to have accreditation. And remember accreditation is differend for BSN and ADN programs. WCCCD is not accredited by NLNAC. It doesn't have to be. It just needs to be approved by the state to meet requirements set by the State Board of Nursing so that students can take the NCLEX. It doesn't mean that the program is any less capable of producing nurses than HFCC or OU. My sister will be attending WCCCD next fall and I'm proud that she will graduate from there.

True your school's accreditation is not likely to matter when applying for a job. But, if you are planning to further your education then it is something that you should look into. As in my case, I plan to go into Nurse Anesthesia so I must graduate from a school with specific accreditation. (EMU grad Dec. 2009! )

Schoolcraft isn't accredited by the NLNAC and you never hear anything about that. When I graduate from WCCCD and pass the NCLEX I will be able to continue my education at any University in Michigan as long as I have a current Michigan RN License. The only accreditation that matters is the SBON. I am currently enrolled in WCCCD's nursing program and I can tell you that it is no joke. I have already learned so much and I know I am getting a great education. NLNAC accreditation is voluntary, SBON accreditation is mandatory.

You do not need to be from an accredited school to get into CRNA school. The minimum requirement is a BSN or another appropriate degree. This is what is found on the AANA website under "requirements". Yes, you will be fine by going to EMU, but so will other people who might not happen to be at an accredited program. Accreditation does matter when selecting a CRNA school, but makes no difference at the undergraduate level. If you go onto any one of the hundred or so programs found in the U.S., I doubt that any have the words "accredited ADN" as a requirement.

This subject matter continues to come up even though it really is a non-issue except in very rare occassions like the military and its requirements.

Okay no offense to the students attending non accredited schools, not that it matters because we all sit for the same exam and the end result is you WILL be an RN. However, won't this affect you down the line, if you decide to say... get your BSN or MSN do any of your credits xfer at all? That was my understanding when it comes to attending a non accredited facility, I was attending an IT school and I left when they lost their accreditation because I could not xfer college credits when I decided to up the ante thus, having to start ALL OVER. Does this apply in the situation with WCCC? Should I use my common sense and answer that question by commenting Warning if you're thinking about furthering your education DON'T GO THERE to get your start?

You have to begin considering the reasons a school loses their accredidation. We just attended a conference with the NLNAC and they wanted to speak with us regarding our experiences in the program. They gave our school high accalades and commented that we are chief in reputation and nclex exam success and ought to pride ourselves for being apart of such an excellent program because there are schools around the state that just doesn't meet the mark. Although we have our share of faults in our pgm {HFCC}. I wasn't sure who they were talking about but I'm sure that doesn't mean anything right?

Candygyrl raises a good question. I have friends who have graduated from non-accredited programs i.e. WCCCD who have went for their BSN and MSNs with no problem. The only acreditation that matters is whether or not the State Board of Nursing approves the nursing program. Some schools want to pay a lot of money for accreditation, some don't. Just another certification to make the school look better, it's just cosmetics. It just boils down to whether the program is approved by the BON. WCCCD has a very good nursing program.

I understand your thinking, and it is nice of you to worry about us, but you should look into these things before making those types of statements. WCCCD credits transfer to all the major universities. I personally plan on getting my BSN at Madonna after I graduate from WCCCD in May. Madonna's program seems to be similar to Wayne County's.

Bottom line is that BSN/MSN programs are looking for applicants who graduated from nursing programs that are approved by the State board of nursing not NLNAC or any organization for that matter.. There are many times of accreditation out there and it's just cosmetic. There is no reason to be judgemental about WCCCD's program. It's hard/intense and I work in the ICU with a lot of graduates from that program and they are top notch RNs.
