Wayne State University

Anyone know anything about Wayne States nursing program. I know that they don't have a wait list they are GPA to be admitted. I was just wondering if anyone had gone there or if anyone was going there. Thanks for any input in advanced.
Kimberly

Did you take all your pre-reqs at Wayne?
How hard was it to get into the program?
If you don't mind what was your GPA to get in?

Thanks so much for the reply.

I applied for fall 2008 and should get my letter by mid June. I hope it's good news....I'll post and let you know.

I didn't take all my prereqs at wayne (they changed the system for admittance after I started taking prereqs). I only took Microbiology, Oraganic and Biochemsitry, and Anthropology at Wayne in terms of the program prereqs, but I have taken other classes there and have done well. I have a 4.0 in the sciences and a 3.8 overall in the prereqs (my C+ in developmental psych at another college before I cared about grades or had a direction in life lowered that prereq GPA ) Hopefully I'll have good news.

Wayne's program is competitive-- I think I remember at an info session that the lowest overall admit GPA was a 3.2 but I can't remember if that was for the traditional program or the second degree... If you went to an information session after this june (there are usually a couple a month in the Cohn building-- check the schedule on the website) they should be able to tell you what it was for the fall 2008 class and how many were admitted out of how many applicants.

They used to have a goal statement which helped people out-- at pynkladie's suggestion I submitted a supplemental letter that explained why I had taken some time/ semesters off and what inspired me to want to become a nurse. Hopefully that helped too (and I pray it didn't hurt...).

I never think it hurts to apply to as many programs as possible-- you're bound to get in somewhere. Wayne's program is very well respected both locally and nationally. I have heard nothing but stellar reviews from people I know in the program. Good luck in the application process and hopefully you and I will both earn spots in the program!

I just wanted to add that I love love love Wayne and that the staff in the office of student affairs is amazing. They are the kindest and most helpful people you will ever meet. Go ahead and schedule an appointment with an adviser and they will let you know what you need to do or answer any additional questions you may have after you attend an information session. (next one is Tuesday June 10th at 10 am if you can make it).

http://www.nursing.wayne.edu/Students/OSA/index.html That's the office of Student Affairs' website if you need to schedule an appointment to see if your courses transfer and if you're on track with your prereqs.

Ok as always I write too much but I hope it might help someone

I did take all my pre-reqs at Wayne State, but there are many students in my nursing class who did complete most of the pre-reqs at a community college. My science GPA turned out to be 2.9 and my overall GPA was a 3.2. The big thing that they want to see is that if you are disciplined enough to get through these heavy duty science courses with good grades, then success in nursing school will be almost certain for you.

And believe or not, your behavior and how you represent yourself dictates a lot to these people. In the fall, there was a student who was given multiple expulsatory warnings for her inappropriate behavior (telling inappropriate jokes and stories, false accusations of other students/professors, etc.). It's like the professors and instructors are watching your every move. Sometimes, your own fellow students will turn on you also. So watch out!

I definitely suggest that you meet with one of the admissions officers and keep in contact with them throughout the process. It's a way they can get to know you.

For those applying for Fall 08, my guess is that you should know the verdict through your online application account around June 6th or 7th, and the official letter of acceptance will be sent aroung June 13th or 14th. That's based on the dates when I found out (yes, I will always remember those dates, they are historical!!!) Once you are accepted, you'll have to attend a mandatory orientation which will be at the end of June or the beginning of July, based on where your last name falls in the alphabet.
I want to wish everyone good luck and see you in the fall!

Thanks for that info I had no idea it would pop up online before letters came out. I'll probably start checking it hourly once June 1st hits... Again thanks for your advice about writing a letter and meeting with an admissions officer. I hope it pays off!

Hi pynkladie,

Do you know the differences between the 2 year RN program and the 4 yr? I'm asking because I have all my pre & co reqs done and am just waiting on acceptance into the HFCC program, which is a 2 year. With that program once I start, I will have only nursing courses to complete and my clinicals will begin. I guess I was curious, if I changed my mind and went straight for the BSN, how different it would be.

I couldn't tell you the exact differences between the 2-year and 4-year degrees. I know there's a few more classes that need to be taken with the 4-year program. I'm pretty sure that Wayne State does NOT accept transfer students who are in the middle of a nursing program at another school. If you decided to complete the HFCC program, an option for you at Wayne State would probably be the RN-BSN degree. That's for nurses who completed the 2-year program at other schools and would like to complete their BSN degree. You'd have to have taken your NCLEX exam and have an RN license though. I don't know the details for that program, but I figure that it's worth looking into.
