University of Michigan-Flint or Oakland University

Greetings All

I am trying to decide between U of M Flint and Oakland University for RN-BSN completion. Both programs are online, Oakland's is cheaper so I am leaning towards that one. I was wondering if anyone has attended either program and could offer any opinions on either school?

Many Thanks,
Lisa

I am doing UM-Flint's RN-BSN program right now. Oakland rejected me, still am unsure why because I graduated with a 3.9 from my ADN program so I went with UM-Flint. I really like the program so far. I took 3 classes last semester and am taking 2 right now while working full time. I don't feel overwhelmed and actually feel like it is pretty easy (so far). Do you have any specific questions about the program?

Hi and thanks for your reply! Specifically I was wondering if the program is 100% online and how the clinicals work. You already answered one big question by letting me know you don't feel overwhelmed! Thats very good to hear. Also is there alot of research papers, group work, etc. I just received an email from them stating that they are handling all communication online now but the site it directs me too is for U of M Ann Arbor and I'm not sure the information there would apply to U of M Flint or not. I cannot believe Oakland did not accept you with a 3.9 my GPA is 3.8 so I am thinking I probably don't have a shot at Oakland.

Thanks for your reply,
Lisa

As far as clinicals, there are 2 classes that have clinical portions to them. One is Community Health Nursing (NUR 410) and the other is Management (NUR 430). You are supposed to find your own preceptor for these clinical portions but I do know there is someone you can contact if you are having trouble finding somewhere to do the clinicals. Each clinical portion requires 6 hours a week in the clinical setting and then the rest of the class is online. On the UM-Flint nursing website they have the forms for these 2 classes that you might want to read to get more info on that portion: http://www.umflint.edu/nursing/RN-BSN/index.htm

I would still apply to Oakland. I was just shocked when I opened the rejection letter and there wasn't an explanation as to why I wasn't accepted.

I am currently in my 3rd semester of classes through U-M Flint. I am very pleased with the program. I could have completed it in 4 part-time semesters, but I decided to stretch it one more semester to not overwhelm myself. Everything is online, with a community health and leadership clinical arranged in your own area. I have already lined up a community health clinical for next semester without any problem even though there is a local RN-BSN program. I find Blackboard to be easy to navigate and getting high marks has not been a problem. I looked into the OU program but my credits would not have transferred in as nicely there. That is definitely something to look into. Most schools have a transfer equivalency site on their web pages.
