Studying out of state

I am currently a Nursing Student in the state of Florida, and after completion of the program I want to work in my home state of Michigan. I was just wondering if anyone knows if I would have to take my board test in Florida still or if I can just take the boards in Michigan? Also wondering if the pay will matter since I will graduate in Florida?

Thanks So Much.
J

You can apply to which ever state that you want for initial licensure. Where you actually/physically take the exam has nothing to do with where you will be licensed. If you are still in Florida at the time, you do not need to make a special trip to MI to write the exam..............you can do it in Florida for Michigan. If you want a vacation before, you can even write it in Hong Kong or London for Michigan. Location of exam has no bearing on anything.

Your salary is based on being a new grad, it has nothing to do with where you attended school.

Application for licensure is the same for an RN applying to work in Michigan. Same fee as well. Where you trained has no bearing on anything. You will need to have your final transcripts sent to MI BON before you can be licensed, but this is the same for any BON in any state.

Thank you guys for the info. I visited michigan.gov and found some forms that would need to be processed and info. on the subject as well.

Florida had a school with a much shorter waiting list and i figured why not, but was just concerned on the licenseing thing. Can't wait until I can practice in michigans' finest hospitals!

thanks again.

WHen i called MI-BON they told me I had to take the NCLEX in NC because that is where I am living right now, then told me that I would have to submit my paper work and they would tell me if I was approved to take the MI test...is there a different standard because I live in NC right now (god bless the military) than that of the florida students?

I am just wondering because I REALLY want to go back to Michigan when I graduate!

Forget what they told you, just submit your application to them. I have no idea of who you were talking to, but they were wrong. You do not have to get a license in the state where you trained.

(ps. I grew up in MI, went to school there, and my original license is from there, and I know many nurses who got there original license there, who did not attend school there.)

There is no specific MI test for licensure. I have a MI license. It was not my first license. I didn't have to take another test to get the MI license. The test for licensure is the same for all states and the passing standard is the same for all states. You can apply to any board of nursing you choose and take the test at any testing site you choose. You can take the NCLEX in NC to become licensed in MI. Maybe that is what the person you spoke with was referring to. You need to submit your paperwork to be licensed in MI if that is where you want your license, but you can take the test anywhere. Heck, you can fly to Seoul to take it if you want to.

What about being licensed in 2 states I know that they have special allowances if you live in a nc/va boardering town and you work in areas right around the boarder. My teacher said I would have to give up my license in NC if I wanted to be licensed in MI and that they would make me take the test in both states (you have already told me that part was wrong)
