Question for newer students at Macomb

I am trying to be as frugal as possible with my text book purchases and I'm wondering if the cd that comes with the new Fundamental's text is just a reference tool or if it is required for the assignments? I got away with not buying the new A&P book that came with a cd and I've seen the 6th edition Taylor book online for $100 less than the school sells it for, I am not sure if it comes with the software, though. So do I need the software? A current student told me I definately need a new med math book, because it comes with a code to access online stuff, is that true? TIA!

I am also extremely frugal and did my best to cheap on all my books but the med math and the Taylor one are the two you cannot. Yes, you need the new med math book with the online access as part of your lab class. The Taylor package comes with the fundamentals text, a clinical nursing skills text, and several skills CD's. We usually watched the skills CD's in lab. I would not say they are absolutely necessary but they are a very nice reference. I use them to review the night before clinical. Some of the procedures deviate from how you will be taught but it is still a nice reference to have and it is only a little more than buying the two texts separetly so I would recommend you have them.

I just looked at Macomb's website and there isn't a med math book listed on the school's bookstore list for the 1500s. Is this book the correct one: Clinical Calculations, Kee, 5th edition?

I've tried to pm you a few times but your box is full! How are you handling being in limbo? I'm going nuts! I wish we had an orientation this month, or something of that nature to make sure we're totally set on what we need to have to start. I know they told us in June, but that was ages ago. I just feel like I'm going to drop the ball on something important ! I don't know when we're allowed to pick up our syllabus, or if we can get a list of books that are required before the syllabus is out (obviously the school bookstore doesn't have the whole list, at least not online). I can't wait to get "in it" and solve a few mysteries

"Clinical Calculations, Kee, 5th edition?"

That is the correct one. The other two you will use the most in 1500's and 1600's are the Taylor one Sugar mentions, Fundamentals in Nursing and then Health Assessment for Nursing Practice by Wilson.

Feel free to send a pm is you have any other questions.

For some reason when I click on your profile it doesn't give me the option to message you. Is this book required, or is it a tool to learn the math? I have a friend that graduated in October and she said that the students were "on their own" to learn the math, that there was no required math text. I know things change, though !

Yes it is required and yes you will basically learn the math on your own. Make absolutely certain you get the Kee clinical calculations with access to the online course. What happens is that you will work through the book on your own online and your lab instructor will check your work and quizzes and such through the online course. You need a medical dictionary of some sort, I have Mosby's on my PDA, its ok but I would rather have Tabers. What you do not need for 1500's are any of the recommended books or the APA manual. You can find lots of info on APA format online.

I cleaned out my box now, sorry! I've purchased 90% of the books so far, and I too am feeling a bit in limbo (and my wallet is reeling!) I know at some point we'll pick up the syllabus and have some reading assignments to do here shortly (it begins!), pretty exciting isn't it?
