I also had a difficult time finding a job. I am not sure whether it was because I was coming from being a LPN in long-term care, because I was a new grad, hiring freezes, or there just being less jobs because of the economy and more people working full-time are second careers or coming back to the workforce after retirement. Anyway I think it is tough almost everywhere for new grads.

I know (at least at my hospital) they have a "hiring freeze' not because there are too many nurses, but because there isn't enough money to hire new nurses. They still need nurses, and they still hire thru the 'freeze' but not in bulk hiring, its just slow (and not so steady) lol. But we will all find a job, may not be our 1st choices, but we tuffed it out thru nursing school (esp hfcc!!!) and this is just yet a nother hill to climb... good luck to all

I just want to say to all you graduates you aren't the only ones! I'm not a "new" graduate as I graduated in 2007...I took a break since I had a lot of other things going on in my life. I passed my boards over 6 months ago, and have not been able to find a job in Virginia area. Not only is the fact that I don't have recent clinical experience working against me, but most hospitals in this area are hiring less new grads, on hiring "freezes" and more grads are graduating so competition is high. Even getting a chance for an interview has been like pulling teeth! Needless to say...I'm relocating to West Virginia where I've been offered a positon at a hospital that doesn't mind my situation. I don't want to leave my friends, my boyfriend, or my family, and I'm going to a place that I'm completely unfamiliar with and know NO ONE....all for the sake of experience. It's going to be tough, but re-locating might be the only option. There ARE other states that are not in the same situations as a lot of hospitals are in now...they will hire new grad RN's...it's just a matter of sacraficing. Something WILL come up...but don't wait for an opportunity...get out there and look for something, even if it's not exactly where you'd like to be. Experience seems to be everything right now...and we can't get experience if no one hires us. There ARE places that will give us jobs! We just need to keep our heads up.

I agree, as a new nurse taking what will give you the best experience is where you should take a job at. I absolutely despised cardiac in school. I am now a RN on a cardiac tele floor and love it simply because I know that with the experience I am getting here I will be able to survive almost anywhere. GOOD LUCK new nurses and new grads.

DMC has plenty of openings and so does Henry Ford, Times are tough but they are hiring. Get your 2 years in the hospitals then your options will broaden
