Moving to Michigan - Which Hospitals Best

by JoAnna McNurse Premium Member

I may be moving to Michigan in the Fall. I'll probably live in Birmingham or Rochester Hills.

Recently visited the area and went in to Royal Oak, Beaumont, Crittington Hospitals. Didn't have time to get to a Henry Ford.

My specialty is Oncology. I am OCN certified with about 3+ yrs experience.
Would appreciate any general info on the above hospitals. And if anyone knows how the oncology departments are run, it would be great to get that info also.

Thanks for your help

I don't know much about any of the hospital, as I'm a new student, but you might consider Karmanos Cancer Institute in Detroit as well.

Good luck.

The only one of the those I've worked for was Beaumont, although the one I worked for was in Troy and I really like them as an employer. I have heard a lot on this board that Henry Ford is a good hospital to work for.

Good luck!

I work at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit in SICU and I love it there. I previously worked at Beaumont and left that hospital after five years in January for Henry Ford and haven't looked back since. Beaumont is heavily recruiting nurses right now because many nurses have left. There might be a sign on bonus involved but that is highly unlikely. The unit I used to work on, 10 nurses including new grads have all quit. I also live in Troy and it doesn't take me more than 20 minutes to get to work via the freeway. Best of luck. PM me if you have any questions about Henry Ford, I'll be more than happy to answer them.

I've heard Karmanos is a wonderful place to work.

Check out the Karmanos Cancer Institute; it is part of the Detroit Medical Center in Downtown Detroit. Or any other big hospital in Detroit. I prefer DMC/Henry Ford over other suburban hospitals (Beaumont/Crittendon etc.) but I'm into critical care/anesthesia. Just depends on what you are into.

I also work at Henry ford, although i've done many clinicals at all of the area hospitals except for Beaumont. My sister however works @ beaumont, and she likes it for the radiology tech program, and a friend of mine gave birth there and the OB area looked really nice, however neither of those help you with oncology so now i'm just rambling. But i DID do one of my clinical rotations on P2 the oncology floor @ Henry Ford and i really liked it there, well staffed, nice/friendly environment, more conducive to someone trying to recover from cancer. i am NOT a big fan of any of the DMC hospitals... although they are practically down the road from henry ford i did clinicals at three of their campus hospitals and i was disgusted with every aspect of it, it was dirty, out dated, staff was BEYOND rude, inadequate parking accomadations, ugh my entire clinical hated it, including our teachers. So i give for Henry Ford, and for DMC.. hope you decide to come join us!!

p.s. DMC's charting system.. UGH its terrible, even the staff nurses couldn't show us how to access things or free text nursing notes... i don't know ur preferences on that but i'll use post it notes on the pts forehead if i have to, to get my nursing notes charted lol..u can never write too much!

You most certainly CAN write too much. Too much can get someone in lots of trouble. Their are risks of double and triple charting too. Chart what you have to. But not too much.

Thanks for getting back to me.
Which Henry Ford Hosp did you work in? I think there is one in the Clinton Township area that will be close to where I might be.

well obviously i wasn't referring to charting about what tricks their dog knows, or what their favorite color is.. i'm talking about objective data/observations/pt statements. if ANY amount of charting gets ANYONE in trouble, then they were obviously doing something they shouldn't have in the first place. Charting is supposed to be truthful, objective, and factual, EVERY nurse i have ever met, and every clinical instructor i've ever had ALWAYS said "you can never chart too much, always cover your own butt" and i work w/that same belief.

JoAnne - i work at henry ford Main campus in downtown detroit, i know there are a TON of henry ford mini hospitals around the state but i didn't know there was one in clinton twp. u can always check on henryfordhospital.com they have those Minds Of Medicine videos in the middle of the page, one of them is about cancer so im sure it will show our hospitals oncology program, my ER is the one featured in the ER video Hope i helped a little!
