Information meeting at WCCCD

Did anyone go to the information meeting at WCCCD last night? What were your thoughts on it?

I left feeling well informed, but surprised at some of the changes they made. I think half of the people there were left feeling a little dismal about it all. What did you think?

Feel free to PM me!

Was the meeting for pre-nursing students or those already in the program. I want to apply to WCCCD as well as Baker to start in the fall RN program. Please let me know what you learned at the meeting. Thanks.

For starters, starting in Spring 09 all transfer students will need to have completed 12 credit hours before the college will evaluate their transcripts. This is a college policy already for general transfers, however, the nursing department waived it for those applying to the program.

Based on this new policy, transfer students will not be able to apply until May of 09 because they will need to complete the 12 credit hours BEFORE they can even submit their transcripts...The deadline for transcript submissions for the nursing program for Spring 09 is 08/01...which means they won't make the deadline even if they take 12 credit hours in the summer semesters.

IMHO, this is a huge change for the nursing department because now it gives residency status to students who completed their prerequisites at WCCCD like myself. There were a lot of people who were upset because they missed the deadline for submitted their transcripts to the college for evaluation for Fall 08 and the new policy prevented them from applying for Spring 09.

I think this is an awesome change. There has been so many loyal WCCCD students that have been at the school from the beginning that lost spots to people from other schools. I say Bravo!!! to the nursing department for making this change.

I have to agree with you! Even universities like Wayne state are giving residency status to students who have taken their prerequisites at WSU for their nursing program now. I believe it is about time that WCCCD does the same and rewards their students for sticking with them from the beginning!

This policy would have been horrible for a good friend of mine who is graduating from WCCCD's nursing program in a few weeks because she was a transfer student from SCC at the last minute and got in. However, another friend of mine didn't get in on her first try because her GPA was good, but not good enough compared to all the transfer students.

So WTG WCCCD!!!!

WCCCCD has been wanting to do this for a long time, for the reasons you mention. They just couldn't say 'no' to outside students because it is a public college, receives public funds, and is obligated to accept all. However, lots of other schools have this rule, including HFCC.

It's a good rule, and really cuts down the number of applicants who can apply at a time. Good luck on your entry!!

(What to watch for next: only allowing the NET to be taken at WCCCD; HFCC changed this rule last year, and requires the NET they will accept can only be taken at HFCC. It's simple to enact, and it further streamlines the number of applicants to the nursing program, rewarding those who are, as another poster phrased it, 'loyal'.)

Question Re: Information meeting at WCCCD
I think this could be a good thing and a bad thing....

On another note I have a question for anyone that may have an answer, opinion or whatever LOL...

I have a friend who is applying in May for WCCCD's nursing program and she has a class that she took online that the instructor was impossible and she was failing the class. This class is NOT a corequisite or prerequisite for the nursing program. Anyway, the instructor gave her an XW instead of a fail and now she is worried about that being on her transcript for the nursing program application. I am not sure what to tell her because I really don't know how it will affect her chances of getting in.

She has a 3.9 GPA and she got an 86 on the NET test. Do you think this XW will hinder her chances of getting into the program? I told her worse case scenerio she will have to retake that class and then reapply for the following semester.

That's great!!!. Maybe many of us will have better chances at getting accepted. Dare2Care tell your friend that they don't care about XW on your transcripts, because it's doesn't affect your GPA on way or the other.

I'm applying for the second time this May. I had to take a few classes to bump up my GPA. I'm praying very hard that I get in.
