ICU position in Detroit/Royal Oak/St. Claire Shores area

by poppy07

Hi all, I will be moving to St. Claire Shores area and want an ICU position, preferably a surgical ICU, or combined unit. I'm trying to find a good hospital that won't require a 2-year contract in the ICU. I looked at Henry Ford, which requires 2-yr, and Beaumont Royal Oak is on a hiring freeze. I have over 1 yr experience in combined MSICU. THANKS!

St John Hospital & Medical Center has SICU positions open and Providence Park Hospital (brand new hospital in Novi, part of the SJH family) has ICU positions open.

I wonder why Henry Ford would require a 2-year commitment to work in the ICU. Michigan RN, are you aware of this? I work at Henry Ford as a NP in the Department of Surgery and some of the RN's in the SICU leave for anesthesia school after only one year of employment there? Must be something new they are doing.

Pinoy, long time no talk. Ok here is what I heard when I asked around. There is no contract. I didn't sign anything stating that I would not leave before two years. When I got hired in but I had to promise not to leave before two years. I confirmed this with another co-worker who hired in at the same time as me. But really can they hold you to that? For me, it doesn't matter because I don't plan on going to CRNA school anyhow and I think that's what the reason behind the "2 year" rule is because people were leaving after a year. I'm going to NP school when I finish my BSN.

Thanks for clarifying. Anyway, I've heard from one of the ICU managers that certain CRNA schools actually like applicants who have ICU experience at Henry Ford on their resume. I guess that's part of the reality of being a nurse in the ICU - every year in the fall, nurses leave to start CRNA school. Good luck on your plan to be an NP - nice to know others are interested in the NP role as well.

So Henry Ford is not REQUIRING a written commitment of 2-years? They would probably be very disgruntled if I left early. I would like to go to grad school, but I still want more experience before I start. I've worked in MSICU for a little over a year, but I don't feel it's adequate just yet. Still, I don't want to be tied to 2 whole more years before I can start something else. What's the difference whether someone leaves after less than 2 years for NP, CRNA, or Nurse Educator school anyway?

Yes. I never signed anything stating I have to stay two years.

Cool. How about St. John Hospital & Medical Center? I just applied to their SICU. It's midnights. I wish I could find a day shift job in SICU. It's going to be tough to switch! Anyone have experience at this hospital, know of patient acuity, staffing/staffing issues, nurse: pt ratios, how long before day shift, pay, etc.? Thanks a bunch

I've heard some not so good things about St. Johns. One of the nurses I work with said that when he worked there sometimes he had three patients in the ICU. But St. John's is a good healthcare system. Have you tried DMC? Detroit receiving gets many traumas.

I saw your post in the ICU forums. I PM'd you about local hosptials in your area. I too work at HFH and never had to promise to stay for 2 years, nor did I have to sing anything.

HFH is a good hospital to work at.
