HFCC Students

I'm almost done taking my pre-req's for nursing. I have to take chem 131, ah 120 and bio 234 left to complete. Does anyone have any ideas on what teachers I should take this winter at HFCC?
Also do anyone if chem 131 is required to be on the waitlist?

yes it has to be finished get on the waitlist.

I took Susan Stewart for both A&P I & II but at OCC. I thought she was an excellant teacher because she's fair and really wants you to learn the material. I hear Dr. Tuner-Radke (sp) is also very good - Prof. Stewart was a student of her's. I'm sure you know to register early for the bios because they fill up very fast. I'm currently taking AH 120 now online - Prof. Davanzo. As long as you complete your weekly homework assignments and participate in the weekly discussions, it's an easy A.

Yes, Chem 131 is required in order to be on the waitlist. If I were you, I would get the chemistry out of the way so you can be waitlisted ASAP. I heard that due to the overwhelming number of applicants, the wait is going to continue to get longer. Hope this helps.

I had Dr. turner radke she is hard,but good. You will know your stuff if you take her.

I am in my first semester of nursing I would strongly heed the advice and take all of your co-req's BEFORE beginning. The program is incredibly demanding and if u work too then pretty much all u will be doing is working & studying. Saying your social life will be on the back burner is an understatement. U will learn the concept of time mgmt until u want to scream!

In regards to AP 234, I have many classmates who took Dr. Turner-Radke and although the reviews are mixed about liking her, she DOES prepare u for the program. The A&P classes are the foundation upon which u build on so don't just memorize the material for the tests, LEARN it!!!!!!!!! Especially the endocrine and cardiac systems and electrolytes! I had Dr Rintz for 233 and Mr Palaski for 234. Both were hard but good teachers.

I don't know what your schedule is like but Taking Chem and AP 234 may be a bit more to take on at once. Taking pharm online is a good idea if u know u can stick to it. U have to pass a pharm test so try to learn that too. You'll have an edge when your brain is trying to learn everything being thrown at u. My teachers told us the first day the program is "fast and furious" and they aren't kidding!!!!!!!!!

That all aside, nursing school is also a ton of fun! I absolutely love my teachers and classmates and clinicals are awesome and learning how to think like a nurse is hard but exciting! HFCC is an excellent school and I take pride in going here. They have like 500+ students enrolled, more than any other CC in the country!

I remember the sheer joy when I got my letter!!!!!!!!!!!

Yeppers, there are many pitfalls or shall I say weeding techniques to rid students who are not up to par with HFCC's Nursing expectations. U have to take a Pharm test, that is quite hard and had better prepare for ( there is one reatke allowed ) and there is also a math test that is easy if u know the conversions. U can also get weeded during practice skills lab (before and during your clinicals). There are like 6 or 7 evaluations that you must demonstrate satisfactorily in front of your clinical instructor. No one has failed but almost everyone I know has had to do a retake on one skill or another, including myself. If unsatisfatory on the retake, they can drop you.

Now I do not want to scare you by the above paragraph. I want you to go to start school with an attitude of a warrior cuz u will need it. This program is like nothing I have ever experienced, I love it and am so proud to be here, but you must dedicate your time to it. If u happen to fall behind, it's almost impossible to catch up. And this is not your typical learning environment, it is 'modular' learning which requires alot of do, find, learn on your own. You must have determination and time mgmt skills. Once u get the hang of what is expected, u can swallow and put aside time to socialize without feeling guilty. Look at it this way, they are cramming like 3 yrs of knowledge and skills in a very short period of time. U will learn it and once u finish your first year as an RN, I am told it all 'clicks.'

I am very happy for you and it will be an exciting 2 years for you. Actually, we graduate together!!!!!!! Be positive, proactive rather than reactive, fly under the radar with your teachers, be nice to everyone and take it week by week. Live for the day not the future. U can do this and u will meet so many amazing people. I am sure I have gained many life long friends!

Tina Aoun-Harb for AH120 is great! You will really learn alot form her. I took her last winter.
I hear Turner-Radke is tough, but very, very good for A & P.
I'm taking 234 right now while in the program. It's tough, but doable. Carrie Dollar is my teacher right now - I like her.
Layla Irabi-Rayhal for Chemistry. She is so wonderful! I am not a chemistry person at all, and she really got me to understand it.
I would do chem first, then AH 120 & A &P, or AH with Chem, but definitely not chem with AP. Get chem out of the way, though, because you will not get on the list until you take that. I'm assuming you took the NET?
