HFCC Nursing Orientation

Well, I expected to be stressed out and panic stricken but it was a very thorough presentation and many forms to fill out. The Dean has a doctorate, has a hx in the military and is the mother of five. She obviously is highly motivated and therefore, expects those same values from students. She was very straight forward and precise in the expectations of the nursing program. It was interesting to learn that 96% of students work during school. I don't work outside the home but am a F/T Mom. I am very excited about taking on this endeavor. Yes, it will be hard, but with good time mgmt, support from family, good study skills and determination, I think anyone has an excellent shot at success. It's not like you're in school 40 hrs a week; u have time everyday to study and it is advised to make a schedule and stick to it no matter what. It is possible to have some time for leisure, though limited, but while maintaining a strict schedule, u can watch your favorite TV show or go out w/ friends. An R.N. will start off @ $46K not including O/T and shift premiums and that along with a guaranteed job after the NCLEX, it sounds REALLY good. Yeah, u will endure a killer 2 years but the payoff is huge.

Good luck to everyone! Be sure to post about your experience!

"It was interesting to learn that 96% of students work during school." That is interesting in deed! I don't work (at a paying job) outside of the home, however, I am a full-time mom. At WCCCD, I am also finding that people do indeed work while in nsg school. Gheez, and I quit my cute little job of 10 years when I started nsg school.... ....oh well, no regrets

Best wishes for the fall. Orientation sounds like it was great. Did you pick you class schedule? Does HFCC have clinicals in the 1st semester? Which hospitals do they use?

The Dean may mention that 96% work, but what she didn't say is that it will most likely be your primary cause of failure in the nursing program. The amount she quotes is 30% attrition rate at HFCC. When you go in to see her because you're failing, that is the first question she will ask you.

The Dean did mention the attrition rate in full detail! She apologized for all the harsh and negative things she was spewing, that she is actually a positive person. After 9 years here, she has seen the 'fallout' and went into detail what to do if it happens. She could not stress enough that u have to shut out alot of the things in your current life if u want to succeed.

On her advice, I signed up for the Math dosage class. I want to be able to these calculations in my sleep so it won't become a hindrance on top of everything else my poor lil brain has to learn!

Her successor was in the room taking notes as this is the Dean's last year.

It was an interesting mix of people in the room. I felt old but there were a few older than me. Saw a few previous classmates, possible study pals come next semester!

I have alot to do before the deadlines roll in. But I register tomorrow and I am fretting over not knowing which schedule will determine my CI! I am crossing my fingers - hope to get a nice one! As if!

What kinds of harsh and negative things were being spewed?

This is so true , when I attended HFCC the students who failed were the ones holding down a full time job plus the added stress of nursing school. I cut down my work hours drastically when I was in the program. During Med Surg 1 & 2 clinical I did not work at all. This is where you will see the most attrition rate. I cringe when I see students in med surg rotation working because I know the outcome usually is not good.
And PLEASE TAKE THE MED DOSAGE CLASSES I have seen students fail the med test. I myself did not take this warning seriously and almost flunked out taking the peds med test twice (you get three chances at passing).
