Detroit Area NICUs


I'm new to the forum.. HI
I'm a NICU nurse from indiana who will be relocating to the detroit area in the fall. I have 7 years experience in a level 3 NICU and have done several flight transports of critically ill newborns...

If anyone has any opinions and/or suggestions on what hospitals to work at or which ones to stay away from and why- it would help me tons!!!!

I have heard from several people that beaumont is the place to be hands down- but they have no NICU positions open currently- so I'm debating on whether I should switch specialties and try ER or OR just to get my foot in the door...

Children's sounds good to me too though, because it is a level 4 and will challenge me. However, I have not heard much about their facility...

St. Joe's in Ann Arbor has a Peds ICU, not sure about NICU. There's also the Holden NICU at Mott Children's Hospital, which is part of U of M in Ann Arbor--they're getting ready to undergo a MASSIVE expansion project. You could also check Henry Ford Hospital and Harper/Hutzel, both in Detroit, but I'm not sure if either of those has a pure NICU. Most of my experience in EMS has been with Holden/Mott at UM, their staff is great, the facilities are getting old, but the expansion/renovation is ready to get underway, the pay isn't the highest, but UM's benefits package is one of the best in the state, if not the country. You could also check the hospitals in Toledo, OH; it's not unheard of for people to commute to Toledo from the Detroit area and vice-versa.

What area are you coming to? St. John Detroit has a NICU and a good one at that ...great doctors/staff...It's also commutable from many locs... I have a friend that is Special Care Nursery RN there that maybe could provide a lead.

True, i am not the RN but i have been there almost a year and i love it.

If you want any more information - just ask.

i think the graduate nurses start out at $22.

St Joes in Ann Arbor does have a Level 3 NICU, as does UM (where I work). We at UM have 40 beds, we do ECMO, and take cardiacs (lots of hypoplasts) as well, we also do lots of Ped Surgery stuff and are gearing up for a fetal surgery program and are starting to do more and more "exit" procedures (delivery of head/shoulders then cannulation on ECMO, then finish baby's delivery) for certain conditions.. It's a pretty good place to work, there are several positions posted right now. BUT! You will not get Christmas off for at LEAST 10-12 years! We have very high seniority. Oh yes, and we are our own transport team. Ground and air, chopper and fixed wing.
