Clinical sites - any opinions?

I have to turn in my preferences for the lottery on my clinical sites in a few days.

I'm starting 2nd year, the OB rotation, and my choices are Botsford, Beaumont and Hutzel Hospitals. All three have afternoon slots (which work great for me), and the instructors have not been anounced yet.

I did my med-surg clinicals at Botsford and really liked it there. The nurses are really nice, and it is very close to my house. I'm just not sure if I want ALL my clinical experience to be at one hospital.

Does anyone have any opinions or suggestions? Thanks in advance...

Hutzel has a good reputation, especially as part of the DMC. Getting broader exposure is a good thing! Good luck. Kepp us posted about your clinicals.

Hi, SusanKathleen,

Thanks for responding. I was thinking the same thing about Hutzel; I'm just a little nervous about the parking and driving home at 11 pm. Sometimes students don't have the best parking situations, or so I have heard.

Does anyone know about this?

Hutzel does seem like a great place for OB, but I heard some horror stories about the nurses and physicians there. Parking may be an issue depending on where they assign you.

Hi,
I did my OB rotation at Hutzel. I loved it down there. They provide student parking & a shuttle service. It's not too far but I was on the day shift & had to be there 1/2 hr. early so that I'd make it to the floor on time. There's a guard at the lot & lots of students so safety isn't an issue. This shuttle stops at all the hospitals in the area (Det. Rec, Children's, Kresge Eye Institute) & I think the Hutzel/Harper stop is the last. We also had to wait after clinicals, up to 1/2 hr, because our clinicals ended during the shuttle drivers' lunch time. Many students decided to pay to park ($2.50) in the structure although I think they have put a stop to that. It was a pain, but hey, it was only 7 wks.

I met 2 "Nice" nurses. One of which was actually helpful. And one very tall, very dark, & very handsome doc!

I worked on the DMC campus for 7 years on the midnight shift and I have never, ever have had a problem (coming or going to the campus at all hours). Nor have I even heard of anyone having problems during my entire time working there. (Also to add I have lived in Detroit my entire life and never have had any violence of any kind towards me and anyone in my family). Use your common sense anywhere you go because remember crime is everywhere.

I have got to add that I hope that the tone of this email is not defensive because that is not my intent. (I had to say that because, I have been accused of being "snappy" in the past lol!) I just think that you have to be careful everywhere. DMC is a busy campus, lots of people at all times coming and going. Unlike some of the smaller hospitals, its always groups of employees and security around. And if you some reason you leave midshift, security will escort you to your car. Off shift employees also park at parking structures that are closer to the hospital (this is true for students too.)

I hope this helps!!

Thank you so much for your information. I worked downtown for 10 years and the commute and location didn't bother me at all, but I did get nervous driving around very late at night (as I do almost anywhere I go these days!) You didn't sound "snappy" to me - and I hope I didn't offend anyone by my question. It was more of a security thing, and I'm glad to know they provide shuttle services, parking structures and security escorts!
