Aren't you finishing up your first year? If you have at least one MedSurg clinical behind you, as well as Fundamentals, you can qualify as a nurse extern at most area hospitals. The pay is at least $14.00/hour, with wknd and evening differential. This is exactly the time you should be calling HR departments in the Detroit metro area, as they will put out their 'call' for externs in March. Most hospitals orientate and train in May, then you work all summer, and a few weekends once school starts. (Or whatever your schedule can handle.)

Everyone has their 'best' place to work. Did you find any hospitals during clinical that you enjoyed?

Have you had 155 yet? Don't work during that class - it's tough.

Thanks, mysimpleplan. I haven't started 155 yet, i'm studying for 150 right now. I know almost all hospitals are looking for may, I was just wondering if any one could give their 2cents on hospitals they have in/externed at..

Totally not in the way you are looking...but restaurants as a waitress. More money in less amount of time. If you are looking as money being more important rather then medical experience.

William Beaumont Hospital Royal Oak or Troy are great places to work. As a second yr nursing student you can work as a Tech in the ER, get tons of experience and have your foot in the door at a hospital when you graduate and...they are expanding and will need tons of nurses in 2009. The tech's start at $14.00/hr and the schedule is really flexible. Just a thought...Good luck on whatever you decide.

St John has a lot of nurse tech jobs open right now, I think they are changing their criteria (according to one of my instructors). You used to have to have completed a semester of med-surge but I don't think that's the case anymore. The only problem is fitting orientation around your nursing classes. At least I have heard that can be a problem.

As a former employee of WBH, yes you can work as a tech in the ER. Up on the floors, once you are done with your externship, they will make you work as a nursing assistant the majority of the time. When I was a nurse tech, I did nursing assistant duties, not nurse tech duties. It bummed me out. I didn't care about the pay I wanted the experience.

Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit is a wonderful place to work. I love it. Started in January in the SICU. You can extern there as well. You get great experience there too.

I'm curious about the externship at HFH, I am interviewing there soon. How does the extern role differ from that of the tech? Also what is the pay for externs?

Thanks in advance,
Virginia
