| | 1st Semester of Nursing School questions???

I will be starting my first semester of nursing school (at SC4) this fall. I know that all schools are different, but I was hoping that someone could tell me what there first semester schedule was like. How many days a week did you go? How long were the days? Did you start clinicals right away (I think that we do)? Where were your first clinicals (hospital or nursing home)? I'm really looking forward to beginning this chapter in my life, but at the same time I'm nervous about how I'm going to be able to juggle my family life with school. Any insight or advice would be wonderful!!
Thanks so much!!

What was your schedule like in your first semester? I have kids as well and I'm trying to begin making plans for school and daycare. I just want to be prepared.

Re: 1st Semester of Nursing School questions???
As for daycare plans, you will need lots of quiet studying time, so plan with your partner or hubby how that will happen. You will need at least 3 hours a day outside of class to study if you want good grades. Also, I can't stress enough, get your household chores organized! Shop and cook on weekends if you can and laundry all ready for the week. Plan meals that are fast or use a crockpot. Eat breakfast, even if it's a breakfast bar. I make oatmeal and eat it in the car on the way to school. Wash your uniform the minute you get home from clinical. Besides not wanting to put those germs in with the family's laundry, it will be ready the next time you need it. I go home, walk into the laundry room, (yes, I'm very lucky!) take off my scrubs and put them right into the washer on HOT. I take them right out of the dryer as soon as they're done and hang them up, they won't be wrinkled next time. I also put my badge and watch right in my scrubs pocket along with a scrunchie so I'm all set to go. It might sound anal, and I'm totally NOT, but with nursing school sometimes you have to be because the instructors are and you might as well get in good habits now. Best of luck, it's fun!

hopin09-
Actually childcare has been my biggest challenge! I am not sure how SC4 is but at OCC we went 2-3 days a week the first semester but unfortunately times and even days would vary for our lab. Then once we started clinical (around halloween) we had an additional 2 days a week. Flexability is the key to success in nursing school, or so they keep telling us! Just try to find flexable childcare and go in understanding that you won't be able to plan too far in advance. We usually don't get our clinical placements until the week before the rotation starts so that is always fun!

3 hours a day is a little insane. I spend about 3 hours a week. Don't let people freak you out too much.

Re: 1st Semester of Nursing School questions???
szyman,
Thanks!! I hope that you're right about the 3 hours a day thing. I know that every school is different, as well as each semester, but I certaily hope that I don't have to study for 3 hours every day on top of going to classes and clinicals. I'm willing to sacrifice, but I do have a husband and kids as well. I know that I'll get through it and some semesters will require more work than others, and I have prepared myself for that.
Thanks again!!

3 hours a week? Including reading and paperwork? Wow.
I agree, don't let people freak you out too much, but also don't give unrealistic expectations. I would plan for a little bit more than 3 hours/week.

Maybe I am on the low end, but I really don't spend much time studying at all, save an occasional hectic week if a lot of assignments are due at the same time. What's important for everyone is to find out what works for them. Some people in my class read everything 3 times and have no lives. Some people don't read a thing and have a blast. You need to find your balance.
I just hate how at orientation and on this site they try and scare the crap out of you saying that it is so awful and time consuming...your family will forget what you look like and that you can never get your laundry done. I'm just throwing it out there that it's not like that for everyone.
