If I had to do it all over again. I would have done the same path. I did put two kids through college and food on the table. Plus working as a nurse in the ER gives you a knowledge base of dealing with all types of people and situations that no university can provide.

but nursing has changed. It’s no longer about care of the patients but about your degree or who on the pecking order you know. When I was trying to explain to a friend of mine who is the head of the BSN program at a major university of, “Why I would want to leave the field and not pursue a BSN, I had several explanations?”
1.) The nursing shortage isn’t my fault, yet as nurses we are held liable and expected to make up the difference.
2.) The economics in this country are pushing many individuals toward the field of nursing that probably need to consider another line of work but due to the “always find a job” mentality enter nursing school. Its amazing the people I encounter that could care less about a person or peoples in life. I will go out on a limb and say this even in an academic environment, “You can teach all the academics in the world and turn out some super nova whiz kids……but the art of caring is un-teachable…..i.e. you either have the art of caring for others or you don’t !!!!!
3.) Hospitals are big business and nurses are at the bottom of the pecking order. Nursing isn’t personal to management. It’s a matter of business and economics and what comes first?

enjoy your day!!!! dave

What area do you work in now? Surgery

What nursing-related degree or certification(s) do you have? AD, BSN

What nursing-related degree or certification(s) do you intend to pursue? I have considered MSN, maybe going into education.

Are you currently a nursing student? No, but aren't we all "students" in some way???

Is nursing a second career? No

Do you believe that people expect you to become a nurse manager because of your gender? Yea, probably. Sometimes not, because of my gender.

Do you intend to become a nurse manager? Rather not.

Are/were you a paramedic? I worked a professional ambulance service while in nursing school back in the "70's, Basic EMT would be close I guess.

Were you a medic in the military? Nope

Do you have a previous college degree? No, had my AD in nursing, then went back and got my BSN.

Were you a pre-med student? Never.

Have you experienced NEGATIVE discrimination as a nurse or nursing student? Maybe once or twice, but nothing I couldn't deal with.

Have you experienced POSITIVE discrimination as a nurse or nursing student? Other than an uncooperative pt calming down, nothing I can really think of.

Hope this helps Mike
