Hey guys,

Well as the lone male LPN in my class its finally good to see that there at some more guys in nursing. Not that I am complaing about being the only guy in my class....it comes with it advantages But when we have lab days and we are in uniform at the college and walking through the school to get to the cafeteria....ya you get those looks. Anyone have any good advice about being a male nurse?

You have to realize that this "eye ball" treatment is most probably only going to occur for you while you are a student. At least for now. Many folks are used or becoming used to men being in nursing...even patients. When I first started nursing, only 1% of all nurses were men. Now, I believe it is 5%. It doesn't look like much, but men in nursing has grown five times as much than when I first went in. The ground has already been broken for you, my friend, in a lot of ways. In fact, many of past patients for myself and my male colleagues have been given many positive marks for choosing our profession and what men can and do bring to it. So, try to ignore the eyesballs if you can. People are much more accepting of us now....just like they are more accepting that a woman can become a doctor and competent at it as well.

Welcome to All Nurses

Many of the geriatric patients at the assisted living facility that I am currently running clinicals at seem to think I am a Doctor.

In a way it does help, they tend to listen more closely to what I have to say. The ladies especially don't seem to want to let me go!

Yes, the eyeball treatment is there and many keep assuming that you'll go on to med school once you become a nurse. Y'know what? After a few weeks, ya get used to that somehow

I don't pay any attention to those idiots who think that men in nursing are wimps - because I know they'll be the first to puke if they had to disempact someone or clean up a GI bleed or an Ostomy bag
