Law enforcement to nursing

by Fox1

I'm thinking about a career change. Is there anyone here that has changed careers from law enforcement to nursing? If so, can you shed some light on the transition, what to expect? I've got a B.S. in C.J..

Thanks

I have 2 friend who were police officers, they were hurt in the line of duty and went back to school for nursing. They both work in ICU and love it. THe biggest problem the had was the fact thier classmates were 19-25 yrs old and didn't take responsiblity of thier actions. But they are both very happy in ICU...

Worked with a nurse who used to be a Federal Marshall. He was HN in the ER, was great at what he did, could usually weed out the drug seekers from the actual in pain patients, was big enough to help when someone needs more physical assistance than we females could give, and had a great insight on how to handle people in general. Go for it. I am sure you would make a good nurse.

I was a city 5-0 and then federal 1811 and got the heave ho due to injury as well a few years back. I just graduated with a BSN this past week. I will second the comment about being in class with 22y.o. idealistic girls. School was a trip, I was respectful but never kissed any instructors back side, some liked it, some didn't. I say go for it, it sure beats always dealing with the 10% of society. I'm open for any backchannel conversations if we need to go there.

Thanks everyone for the replies. I've got a few applications out already (colleges) and am hoping to get in for fall 08. The reasons for wanting to do this are, helping people, learning new ways to treat people (learning medical stuff has always been an interest), and yeah making a few more dollars would be nice to.

Thanks again!

Cinja, what is a city 5-0? Is it a patrol officer? What is a federal 1811? Thanks!

Retired 5-0 here (still work part-time). I became an RN in 2006. Just like any job, nursing has it plusses and minuses. Good outweighs the bad.

Are you enjoying the part time work. I do miss working patrol, would love to work a power shift or two a month.

Cindy,

A Federal 1811 is a Special Agent. Just about every federal agency has some type of special agent, including those employed within the USDA, HHS, DHS, DOI, DOA, DOD, DOJ, DOT, even the U.S. Postal Service uses Special Agents.

Best regards,

Michael
