Piggy Bank Re: Law enforcement to nursing
Man, I can think of so many times in nursing I could have used a nurse with a cop's background! Instead, I always got the little security guards with white hair and bilateral hearing aids. I've been told I'm dangerous....just need to be armed! Best to all of you, and good luck to those of you trying to make the transition.

Unfortunately, our facility has laid off a large percentage of our little old security guys (and gals) with bilateral hearing aids. Sad part is, the facility is in a not-so-nice part of town. All of the local talent know that the building is full of desirable pharmaceuticals.

Have you decided whether or not to take the plunge?

I retired several years ago from working as a federal LEO with drug and bomb dogs. I've spent the past two years completing my pre-reqs and will begin the nursing school in the fall.

I too already miss a lot of aspects of being on the job, and will be looking for a slot in forensic nursing or on an ME team as a nurse investigator.

Help a wanna-be out here... 'DST' is that as in Diagnostic Sonography? And if so, what is prompting the switch?

I'm sorry to hear of your injuries, I can sure empathize with you. Two back surgeries and three ruptured disks ended my days of leaping tall buildings with a single bound... they too put me out to pasture kicking and screaming.

Good luck to you!

Ya I'll need al the luck I can get. When you get the golden hand shake in the only job you ever prepared for and now have to go back out into the world and find a new one, man it sucks. All my aunts are nurses and my lil brother whos account this was, is a R.T., so I have lots of help but unlike all of them, this wasn't my first choice. I just hope I like it as much as I think I will!!!!!!!

Ah the few the proud the injured cop! I was on for 6 years befor taking a 9mm in the back of my hand. (och!) After 2 surgeries lasting a total of 10 hours and 2 1/2 years of OT. They showed me the door and yes I was kicking and screaming the whole way. I even taught my self how to shoot with the other hand. They told me I was a liability. SO I bounced around for a few years then decided to go back to school. I am in nursing school now and it is going good. I find that there are a lot of similarities ecspecially the E.R. I would go back to police work in a second if they would let me but I think nurseing is going to be a good alternitive! And Yes I am a **** poor speller but I am carring an A in nursing so I figure it just another trade off
