Actually, casn made a great point.. it's important not to forget about the dads out there. I would imagine that, in this day and age, (depending where you are, of course) a guy could be accepted as a Lactation Consultant. A guy might be able to reach fathers where a gal might not... just a thought hoping to keep you optimistic!

In my Lactation Consultant class, we're talking about all sorts of interesting challenges that come up - men haven't been nearly as big a factor as same-sex parents who both want to breastfeed, transgendered parents, invitro, and surrogate situations!

I say, go for it!

I'm sorry to butt into the guy's forum too, but I have to tell you, I had major complications with the birth of my daughter 8 years ago, but was hell bent on breast feeding, even though I was too weak to hold her independently. The lactation consultant had to teach my husband because I was so out of it. My now (ex)husband would make an outstanding lactation consultant even though he isn't a nurse (although he's been married to 2 of them???) because he had to do all the positioning for me!!!He can even set up the little hanging feeders that they attach to your breast and everything. If he can do it, ANYONE can! LOL - I say go for it!

Love Re: Lactation Consultant
Well, this made me laugh... sorry also to drop in on you guys. I have to share... Last year at my yearly GYN exam, I ended up seeing the "other guy" in the practice. My Doc was in surgery. Well, when it was time to do the breast exam I noticed his hand was really shaking while he was examining me, and he seemed kinda jumpy and was barely touching me. I have never had that happen before! He was young, but I know he's been in practice for 7 years. LOL! I had to wonder, (am I that hot?) I wasn't upset of course, but really had to squelch the giggles for some reason!!! I then realized he was having a hard time with this. Now after reading these posts, I feel bad for him (just a little) I am glad I haven't had to examine any really hot guys! I am sure I might blush!

I would assume there would be a mix of women who would or would not be uncomfortable with a male in this job. However, speaking personally, I think I would be terribly uncomfortable in this position having to grab boobs and get babies to suck all day long. But hey, that's just me.

No I haven't. I truth be told am uncomfortable with a female lactation consultant while they watch me nurse. But if that is what you want to do go for it.

I just had a baby, and I would decline a male lactation consultant.. sorry. Its stressful enough having a baby, I wouldnt want to deal with a male 'helping' me on top of that.
