Okay, let me see if I understand here. If a female patient asks for a male nurse then according to your nurse friends there is some deep emotional problem. But if that same female chooses a male doctor that is different?

That's not fair to female patients or male nurses. The only females that request them have emotional problems? Nawwww, I can't agree.

First off...this is coming second hand I only agree....IF a pt needs say an internal exam in the ER ....a female doc walks in....she says...NO...I only want a male doctor to do the internal exam....this is what we all find a LITTLE strange.

If ANYBODY chooses a doc male/feamle...prior to the ER...who cares........

IF they need to go to the EMERGENCY ROOM and REQUEST A doc of a different sex..and yes ...wanting a male doc to give an internal is strange to the DOCTORS here in the ER where I am at the moment.......THEN...yes it is strange. It is MORE common to have a request for a FEMALE nurse or doctor than it is for a MALE nurse or doctor .....with THESE docotrs here anyways......

It doesnt matter nurse or doctor.......HERE.....if a female will only deal with members of the opposite sex...it rings a little bell for maybe there"s some underlying issues that needs exploring as to WHY this is. Ok?

It just isn't the norm here ..THAT'S all.

When I have a female patient specifically request a male nurse immediately my radar goes off.

Any patient who makes such specific requests (except in issues of pericare/embarassment issues) is likely to be manipulative, and may need boundaries.

Now...some guys are very comfortable even with flirtatious or innappropriate females; and know how to handle them, so we can take things on an individual basis sometimes.

We've all had the innappropriate male patient who leeringly requests the sweet young nurse. Some women do the same with the good looking young males. We gotta look out for each other in both cases.

I've never had a male claim a female nurse had molested them; but I've dealt with dozens of females claiming the male caregiver was innappropriate...so we gotta be real here.

See, this is what I don't get. The automatic assumption is that the female patient is flirtatious or inappropriate in some way. As a female patient I would never dream of such behavior! Not in a million years! But I have to admit, I think it is a sad sad day when people (not just you, others too!) automatically make such assumptions. It's a reaction. I understand that. I just don't like it.

If I were in labor, if I had GYN issues, if I stripped each time the nurse came in the room and danced, if I was inappropriate... I could understand. But amazingly, some of us just want a male nurse. No strings attached, nothing. I was never nude in front of my nurse, I never had an embarrassing procedure. I have a clotting disorder, nothing more. How many times does a patient have to strip for a blood disorder?? A PE?

People think nothing of a woman going to a male OB/GYN but a male nurse? The horror! How does this make sense? I think men get their jollies from seeing a female patient as much as women get their jollies from seeing a male patient. We don't. It's a job, it's a procedure, it's the way life is. Just not a biggie.

Until we get over this male vs. female thing then men are going to continue feeling as some do. They are going to feel like outsiders. In reality we are all professionals, medical professionals. That's all, nothing more and nothing less.

This thread has made me more sure that any time I am in a hospital I will ask for a male. If nothing else just for the respect factor. People ask for females but clearly they don't ask for males. I will!

Actually I don't think its that uncommon for a women to request a male nurse. I have had a couple female patients they prefer male nurses because they are more patient and caring

While I understand what you write, if I dare to agree I'll be made out to be mentally ill yet again.

But I will say that sometimes people perceive things differently. While one person perceives something one way, I'll see it a different way.

Thank you.
