Trust me, I've dealt with crazy and angry docs on many occasions. Guess I've been lucky none of them have "yelled"

Perhaps I have a different definition than some because the other day a doctor talked to a nurse "why didn't you call me last night that my patient's BP was 200/100? He could have had a stroke. I need to know these things." She basically was talking in a normal voice. After she left the nurse said "did you see the way she yelled at me? I wasn't even on duty when the BP was that high."

To me yelling is a lot louder than what this nurse claimed was yelling.

We have one that sometimes goes beyond yelling. He likes to throw things. Scares the hell out of some of the female RNs.(Mommy probably didn't hug him enough). Of course, the hospital looks the other way. I have noticed that he is generally calmer among the male staff, as he likely worries about getting his butt kicked.

Yeah, Administration's tendency to look the other way when the doc's act out is amazing isn't it? We have one ortho that is a cl"ass" act, but he rakes in big bucks for the hospital with his "spine clinic". Surprisingly enough, no matter how many times you yellow sheet him, he remains in good standing. But the next time your doc started tossing stuff, I'd nail him with hostile work environment and workplace violence.

From my experience, a doctor's/group of doctors' repeated demonstration of ill behavior towards nurses is often a reflection of Administration. The attitude upon high does often trickle downward.

I haven't really had any docs yelling at me during my years, but recently i was blantantly disrepected on the unit. I was during AM shift change and even though i had to give report on my 5 patients to the AM shift nurse, i was helping the CNA give pericare and linen change to a LOL. as i was attempting to leave the patients room, the residents, attendings and medical students were huddled outside the room (about 12 of them) and i was unable to get past any of them . I made 4 polite attempts to ask them to briefly step aside so i could pass, but they ignored me altogether! keep in mind i am 6'2" and 240 lbs, so there is no way you could miss me. I was exhuasted, and anxious to give my report and move on with my day off. I became very irritated at being not respected and i said "MOVE IT. DONT IGNORE ME. AND LOSE YOUR GOD COMPLEX NOW"! Well, it worked fast!

I have found that if a doctor is yelling at me it is usually the result of one of two things...1. The doctor does not understand what is going on with the patinent and believes it is my fault or 2. The doctor does not understand what is going on with the patient.

People yell...Docs yell...Yes Sir, Yes Mam...give them what they need and move on. Choose your battles.

P.S. I am not an RN...BSN student...but I am a Medic and have worked in the ER. Manage the problem and forget the symptoms.

My boyfriend is a resident doctor and he told me that its usually the other way around...that the nurse's yell at the doctors, espeically if they are residents or interns. In my opinion however, I think it goes both ways. They both can be mean and nasty to each other. One is not worse than the other. I guess it depends on the stress level of the hospital you are in, and how well staffed it is. I don't know. But hey, just think of all the poor CNA's out there that get yelled at by nurse's everyday for not working fast enough (lol!). I think its worse when the family of a patient yells at you though. That's like the ultimate worst. Guys nurse's are usually loads nicer than female nurse's by the way (at least in my experiance) ; )
