This is pretty good. Any history buff can tell you how good old Audie Murphy, WWII's greatest hero didn't look the part. He was REJECTED by the Marines and the paratroops. He was only about 5'2", maybe less. When he finally got overseas in the infantry, his commander was so concerned about this little boy who looked about 14 or so, he tried to have him reclassified as a cook.
John Wayne never served a day in uniform except in his movies.

For as much as any one might ever think less of a man for being a nurse, he is likely to change his mind as soon as soon as he needs one.

Yes, all of these characters were larger than life...they were meant to be, but are not very good role models for our day and age. In their private lives, I am sure they were much different.

Reminder to keep posts respectful...we are all members and guests.

Being "macho" isn't all there is to being "masculine".

I was in labor and a male nurse was sent to check me...I sent him out(nicely.) Sorry guys, don't hate me but I still am not comfortable with a male ( be he a nurse or doctor)doing that. Give us time and more exposure to male nurses and it won't be as bad. But we women still hear of horror stories like Male ED nurses in miami taking advantage of a girl who came in unconcious.

Pure paranoia.
So do you request a female cable installer, electrician, or phone installer, in case the cable guy or male electrician corners you and violates you in your own home?
Or female police to come to your rescue in case the male officers might violate you as well?
I find that interesting because for so many years women had no choice but to be seen by a male doctor but now some women brought up in more modern times won't be seen by one.
Talk about moving backwards.

You weren't unconcsious and defenseless like the girl in the Miami ED when that male RN came in to see you and you sent him away.

I'm assuming that you were a grown adult woman at the time, fully conscious, and certainly capable of handling herself if need be.
If you are ever treated or touched inappropriately by a male MD or nurse, you're not totally helpless in doing something about it.
A grown woman is not vulnerable and helpless like a child.

I also can't see justifying a "female staff only" policy over reading sensational news accounts of "male nurse predators."

I am not trying to justify a female only policy. I am saying that some women aren't comfortable with men doing thier OB care. I am a grown woman, and I advocated for myself not to have a male nurse for that particualar procedure. I hope I did not hurt the male nurses feelings. I apologized profusely to him, but I wouldn't let him check my cervix. I don't care if a male nurse or doc does other things(IV's etc), but I don't want one doing my Ob care. I personally had a bad experience w/ a male ob doc which is why I was nervous having another male check me. an estimated one out of 3 women in America have been sexually assaulted, this tends to make some women skittish ( I feel terrible that I might have made that nurse feel bad, It wasn't that he was less competent or a sexual predator, but due to previous experiences I was not able to let him do that part of his job.)
I am just tryting to explain why some female patients aren't comfortable with a male nurse doing certain procedures.

We all have a right to have our preferences respected when receiving medical care. It has nothing really to do with the care giver...only the patient. We need to be sensitive to this.

Reading your first post gave me the impression that you only wanted female staff to do any care on you at all.
I can understand the awkwardness involved in procedures that may be humiliating enough with a female doc without making it even worse by having a male do it. I understand your point here.
