First, and most important, depends on the locale of the job.

I see interviewees all of the time, and very rarely do you see them in a suit unless they are coming thru to interview as a physician for a fellowship, or something similar to that. As a nurse, you rarely see a suit. Just please no scrubs.

Think of what you would wear on a Friday if in the work place. That is what is meant by business casual. Not just plain casual. Two different things entirely.

It depends on your look. I have a somewhat gruff appearance, so my interview clothes are a navy blazer, khakis, blue shirt and maroon tie. It takes down the authority of a suit by a couple of notches, yet conveys respect for the interviewer and an impression of appropriateness and preparedness.

If I was one of those youngsters blessed with boyish face and rosy cheeks, especially if short, I'd jack up the authority with an expensive, well-fitted black or navy suit (not medium blue), white shirt, rep tie, black wingtips, and a watch no kid would wear.

Some people are not fastidious about watch, belt, sock color, etc, but I think this can be a mistake. I feel it's worth paying attention to these details and being conventional rather than "myself," as nursing is more a matter of not screwing up any of a hundred things than of having creative insights.

My last interview I wore golf shorts and golf shirt. I did leave my cleats in the car, though. I still get hired.

Wearing a suit to a nursing job interview is excessive and in nursing school they told us business casual or maybe a shirt and tie. Depends on where you interview. I see what some of the female managers wear and consider business casual and it's pretty rediculous.

That works here in hot muggy Florida. No need to suit up here. A nice shirt and casual pants like Dockers works fine.

Right now as hot and muggy as Texas is. I would wear nice golf shorts and a shirt.

Cleats optional
